Jean Dassow, age 64, of Appleton, passed away on April 19, 2013. She lived these last months with amazing courage, strength, and grace through her illness while living at the Fox River Assisted Living Center in Appleton, WI.
Jean was born in Milwaukee, on February 18, 1949, to Stewart and Doris Westerfeld. Jean attended Whitefish Bay high school, and attended the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater for a year. She married and had one son, David. Jean later attended the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, earning a degree in commercial art. She owned a stained glass business in Oshkosh, creating many beautiful items, and worked in many diverse businesses over the years.
Jean was extremely talented in knitting and embroidery, and felt so at home being a member of the Hooks and Needles knitting club, the Wednesday knitting club, and the Wisconsin Embroidery Guild. She knitted many beautiful pieces of apparel, and embroidered lovely pictures and other decorations. One of her great loves in live was gardening; the seed catalogs were her palette, and her backyard was her canvas. Jean's favorite time of year was spring and summer, when she and friends could enjoy the fruits of her beautiful plantings, as did the butterflies and birds. Jean also enjoyed helping her friends with plant sales, ailing plants, and caring for "their" gardens.
Jean is survived by her son, David Dassow, of Appleton. Preceding Jean in death were her parents, and her brother, Steven.
Jean endeared herself to many people. Close special friends: Gin Radtke and her partner, Catherine 'Chi Chi' Schrader, Appleton; Wendy and Peter Juneau, Appleton; Marla Mischler, Appleton, and Maureen Radtke, Appleton. All of the Radtke's including Doug and Cate, Appleton, and Kat Archambault, Minneapolis, considered Jean part of their family. Also many other special unmentioned friends, you know who you are; as well as her dear kitty cat Haley, who now resides in the loving home of Gin and Catherine.
It was Jean's wish that no service be held, however, a celebration of Jean's life will take place on Sunday April 28, 2013, at Fox River Assisted Living Center, 5800 Pennsylvania Ave., Appleton, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, Jean would appreciate donations being sent to the Fox Valley Humane Society (N115 Two Mile Rd., Appleton, WI. 54914), or you may want to plant a flower or green plant in her honor.
Thank you to the staff of St. Elizabeth Hospital, special thanks to the staff at Fox River Assisted Living and Theda Care at Home Hospice, who provided compassionate care and friendship to Jean. We will remember tenderly in our hearts and minds our dear friend Jean with her incredibly beautiful and radiant smile.
The Serenity Prayer
May God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.
