Mathewson, Jean M.

Jean Marie Mathewson, age 87, of Appleton, went to her heavenly home on Friday, March 28, 2014, after an unexpected brief illness. She was born June 12, 1926, in New London, daughter of the late Raymond and Florence (McKenzie) Prahl. Jean graduated from New London High School in 1944. After graduating in 1948 from Columbia School of Nursing, Milwaukee, she worked at Billings Hospital at the University of Chicago for 5 years. Jean later filled other positions in Seattle, WA, Birmingham, AL, the Milwaukee and New London areas. She married Reza Mehran and they spent 3 ½ years living in Iran. While there Jean worked for the United States "Point Four" program as the employee health nurse. For a short period of time she acted as director of nurses for the Iranian Oil Company. In 1958, Jean and daughter, Shereen, returned to New London where she worked for Dr. George Dernbach. In 1962, she married Hogan Mathewson and they lived in the Milwaukee area until 1986, when she and Hogan retired and moved to New London and later to Appleton. In her younger years Jean enjoyed crafts, rug hooking, attending concerts, the theatre, golfing and tending her flowers. Her most enjoyable times were times spent with her family. She was an active member of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church, Appleton, where she enjoyed the "Young at Heart" senior group and bible studies.

Jean is survived by her husband, Hogan; daughter, Shereen "Sheri" Scott (Alan Gill); 2 grandsons, Chad (Jacqueline) and Joseph (Melissa) Scott; 6 great-grandchildren, Owen, Lily, John, Leah, Brianna, and Charlie Scott; 2 brothers, Kenneth and Kerran Prahl; sisters-in-law Barbara Prahl, Marion, Lois, Debbie, and Sally Mathewson; brothers-in-law Fred Sweeney, Thomas Mathewson, and Edwin Eggert.

She is preceded in death by her parents, brothers Keith (Imogene) Prahl and Junior (Virginia) Prahl; sisters Joyce Sweeney, Joan Arnold, and Janice Mathewson; sisters and brothers-in-law Carol Prahl, Margaret (Robert) Meyers, Edward (Augusta) Mathewson, June (Lester) Schroeder, Bonnie Mathewson, Richard and John Mathewson, Henrietta Eggert, Robert (Florence), Elwood, and DuWayne Mathewson.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, April 1, 2014, at 11:00 a.m. at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church, Appleton with Rev. Kurt Hoffmann officiating. Burial will be at Floral Hill Cemetery, New London. Visitation will be held at the church on Tuesday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of services.
