Lester Vogt(1925 - 2014)

Vogt, Lester L.

Lester Lowell Vogt, passed peacefully with his sons by his side on Jan. 4 2014 at the age of 88. He had been hospitalized at Appleton Medical Center for congestive heart failure and pneumonia in late December.

Les was born in Sioux Falls, SD on Aug. 25, 1925 to Bertha (Ratzlaff) and Theodore Vogt, the 3rd of five children. He was raised in Marion, SD and graduated from high school there in 1943. He then entered the US Navy and served in WW II as a Sonar man on SC 732. He returned to Marion after the war, where he met the love of his life Martha M Buller. They married on May 25, 1947. Les worked for the railroad for the first few years of their marriage; and they had their first two children, Jerry (April 1948) and Richard (April 1951). In the summer of 1952, they decided they had enough of South Dakota winters and moved the family to Southern California.

In California, they settled in Upland where Lester worked in the grocery business, eventually becoming an Asst. Manager. Their third and final child Frank was born in Upland in April 1954. While their children were growing up, both Les and Martha were active in church, youth and scouting activities.

After the children graduated from Upland High School, Les and Martha moved to Banning CA in 1977 where they became more active in the antique business. In 1980 Lester took early retirement because of Martha's breast cancer diagnosis. He was her constant companion until Martha died on April 8 1982.

In 1990 Lester moved to Appleton to be near his son Jerry and grandchildren. In addition to helping out with his Wisconsin grandchildren, he enjoyed visiting his sons and grandchildren in Oregon and in Minnesota. He was a loving grandfather and a treasured part of the lives of his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. His hobbies included walking, listening to music; and he particularly enjoyed bird watching.

Les is survived by 3 sons: Jerry (& wife Lee Vogel) of Appleton WI, Rick (& wife Roberta Reed) of Edwards MN, and Frank (& wife Susan Coast) of Seal Rock OR; by grandchildren: Jessica, Nick, Ben, Jack, Ramsey, Max, Cirrus, Ona; by great-grandchildren: Alder, Rowan, Linden, Brennen, Keira, Hazel, Lucinda; and by 3 brothers: Leroy of Dubuque IA, Orval of Watertown WI, and Lawrence of Monticello KY.

He was preceded in death by his wife Martha, his parents Bertha and Ted, his grandson Yury, and his sister Virginia.

A private family memorial service will be held later in 2014. The family requests no flowers; local donations may be made to ThedaCare Hospice of Appleton WI, or memorials to the local organizations of one's choosing. Online condolences are accepted at Valley Funeral Home in Appleton (www.valleyfh.com).

Lester's family would like to thank the staff of Appleton Medical Center, especially nurses and respiratory therapists of the 8th floor, the hospice team, and Dr. Jack Swanson and Dr. Norma Turk - for loving kindness and skilled care. Also special thanks to daughter-in-law Dr. Lee Vogel for compassion and care during this difficult time. All of you served as "midwives" through the dying process. Thank you.
