Mary Clare McVey
Clare McVey, of Appleton, passed away on Saturday, March 29, 2014 at her home and has gone to join John. She was born on January 19, 1935 in Port of Spain, Trinidad, the daughter of the late Hugh and Clara Mazely. Her family relocated to Jamaica in 1939 where she grew up. At the age of 17 she attended Webster College in St. Louis. It was in St. Louis where she met John McVey. Two weeks after she graduated from Webster, she married John on June 16, 1956, at Holy Cross Church in Jamaica. They lived in Louisiana where John was stationed in the U.S. Air Force until moving to Wisconsin.
Clare started her lifelong dedication to the Xavier/Aces in 1968. First working part time in Xavier's Library, then onto the business office. Her devotion led her to become the Executive Administrative Assistance for ACES, until her retirement in 2005. She watched over ACES from inception through its early growth stages and into its current home.
Clare continued the Prison Fellowship Angel Tree Project after the passing of her husband John. Throughout her life she greatly enjoyed cooking and entertaining at her home for friends and family. She spent her summer time gardening and pruning her flowers. Winters were spent quelling her voracious appetite for books and planning next spring's flower plantings.
Clare is survived by her daughter and four sons: Karen (Keith) Rusch of Appleton, Mark (Robyn) McVey of Rock Island, Illinois, Timothy (Cheryl) McVey of Appleton, Patrick McVey of Appleton, and J. Peter (Karen) McVey of Appleton; grandchildren: Jason (Sandy) Parmer of Milwaukee and J. Matthew Parmer of Rogersville, Tennessee; Eric (Lauren) Forseth of Appleton and Jessica Forseth of San Francisco, California; Erin McVey and Robert McVey of Rock Island, Illinois; and Margaret Clare McVey of Appleton; and five great grandchildren. She is further survived by a loving sister and brother, Catherine (Charles) Levy of Kingston, Jamaica and Hugh (Eleanor) Mazely of Port of Spain, Trinidad. Clare was preceded in death by her husband John and an infant granddaughter Hope McVey.
