Vue, Thor Vang
Thor (Xia) Vang Vue, aged 94, died peacefully on January 25, 2014 at home in Sheboygan. Thor was born August 9, 1920 in Naj Phuv Naj Yaj, Laos, the daughter of Nkaj Yig Vang and Phuab Vue.
Thor came to America in March 1980 as a Hmong refugee from Laos after the Fall of Saigon in 1975. Thor started her new life all over again—her flexibility, creativity, and desire to learn helped Thor become a U.S. citizen in 1985. She learned to speak English via evening adult classes, speaking with store clerks at thrift stores, and small conversations while riding the buses between Kaukauna and Appleton. Thor recognized the importance of education and ensured that her children graduate from college. Thor loved gardening and traveling to see her relatives/families and new places—she's been back to Laos and Thailand to visit her sister and to ten states. She raised most of her 22 grandchildren until school age.
In 1948, Thor married her first cousin, Nhia Pao Vue, in Laos. Their life was interrupted as her husband was recruited to fight in the Secret War. In 1975 Thor and her family crossed the Mekong River to Thailand as refugees.
Thor is survived by her sisters, Ntxawm Xiong of Wausau, WI, and Yias Vue of Vieng Kham, Laos; a brother, Paj Ceeb Vang of Fresno, CA; five children; My Thao, Chuedang, Naotou, Mai Zong and Nhialee; 22 grandchildren; and a number of step-children and grandchildren, and many relatives.
A traditional Hmong funeral will be held for Thor at Valley Funeral Home, 2211 N. Richmond St., Appleton, Friday, February 7 through Monday, February 10, 2014. Please contact daughter Mai Zong at 608-622-1842 with any questions.
