Veta Matilda (Rieken) Wichman, age 92, passed away on April 8, 2013, at Appleton Health Care Center, at Appleton, Wisconsin
Veta was born February 10, 1921, in Charles City, Iowa, the daughter of Oscar R. and Mollie (Becker) Rieken. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church in Prescott, Wisconsin. Veta was raised on the family farm in Oak Grove Township, Pierce County, and later she attended and graduated from Prescott High School in 1939. She became an elementary school teacher
having attended River Falls State Teachers College, River Falls, Wisconsin, and Dr. Martin Luther College in New Ulm, Minnesota. She taught five years in the rural schools of Pierce County, followed by four years in the St. Matthew Evangelical Lutheran one-room school, in Appleton, and one year at Bethany Evangelical Lutheran School, Hustisford, Wisconsin. She then worked four years as a receptionist and accounts receivable clerk at United Grocers' warehouse on W. Washington Street in Appleton and then taught another four years at St. Matthew Evangelical Lutheran three-room school, the primary grades 1-3.
Veta retired from Aid Association for Lutherans in 1986 after twenty-six and one-half years of service. She married Victor E. Wichman on November 28, 1964, who preceded her in death on April 25, 1984. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Oscar and Mollie Rieken, one older sister, Louise, and a step-daughter, Carol Learman.
Veta was a long-time member of St. Matthew Evangelical Lutheran Church, Appleton. She was a member of the Fox Valley Visually Impaired Peoples Support Group, the Peer Counseling Program for seniors, and the Fox Valley Chapter of the Advocacy Coalition all held at the Thompson Community Center, Appleton. Also, she was a member of the Midwest Association for the Blind. After her vision loss she became involved in reminiscent writing, having published a number of articles and poems.
Veta is survived by a very special family of friends: Don and Donna Knudsen family, Manawa, Bob and Gail Haag family, Winchester, Mary Quakenbush, Appleton, Herb and Fran Harder family, Chilton, Mary and Ellen Courtney, Kaukauna. Other survivors include a sister, Lura Stockinger, Wauwatosa, a brother, Oscar (Dorothy) Rieken, Prescott, three nieces and three nephews, four great nieces and seven great nephews, a step-daughter, Sandra Skattebo of Valders, eight step-grandchildren and two great-step-grandchildren, plus many other relatives and friends.
Visitation will be held Sunday, April 14, 2013, from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at St. Matthew Evangelical Lutheran Church, 129 S. Mason Street, Appleton, with the funeral service immediately following visitation. Interment will be at Highland Memorial Park, Appleton. A memorial fund has been established.
