Hyson, David J.

MADISON-David J. Hyson, age 86, passed away at Meriter Hospital in Madison, WI on April 29, 2014. Born in Neenah, WI on August 11, 1927 to Adolph and Loreane Hyson. Graduate of St. Patrick's Grade School, Menasha High School, Marquette University, University of Wisconsin-Madison. Member of Menasha High and Marquette University bands. Dance band musician/leader: 1941 - 1955; tennis player: 1936 - 2009. Worked as vocational/rehabilitation counselor at non-profit agencies and for State of Illinois and State of Wisconsin.

He was proud of his years as a musician, and his work in rehabilitation counseling. He enjoyed listening to and talking with traditional jazz musicians; liked to play the piano; and wrote many a commentary about his diverse experiences. Some writings were in The Agora, a publication of PLATO, UW-Madison. He was a tennis player of high ambition and modest achievement.

Preceded in death by sister, Kathryn Murray. Survived by wife, Margaret (Reiman); daughters, Melissa and Evelyn; brother, Frank (Mary) Cos Cob, CT and their children Kathleen, Rosemary, and Anne; granddaughter, Hazel Van Valkenberg; sister, Helen (Clay) Miller, Reading, MA; several brothers and sisters-in-law; nephews, nieces, and cousins.

David was most appreciative of his family and his friends. He thanks Dr. Ken Felz and Dr. Praveen Deshmukh and many members of the medical profession for helping preserve him into old age.

In lieu of flowers, donations could be sent to the Greater Madison Tennis Association or the Madison Jazz Society.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 3, 2014, at JOYCE-RYAN FUNERAL HOME, 5701 Odana Road, Madison. Burial will follow at Resurrection Catholic Cemetery. A visitation will be held from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service at the funeral home on Saturday.
