Donald E. Long, age 82, of Appleton, passed away on Sunday February 19, 2012 at home, after a long battle with cancer, with his loving wife June at his side. He was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in 1994, and suffered through the many complications of the disease, which he fought with courage, dignity, and a sense of humor. Donald was born May 12, 1929, in Appleton, son of Harry and Alice (Landers) Long. He proudly served as a Sergeant in the United States Army. He was a leader with the Appleton Jaycees for many years, and received awards for Distinguished Service, Distinguished Citizen, Lifetime Member, Key Man, and Outstanding President. He worked with Appleton Chamber of Commerce Agri-Business for 15 years; was chairman of the June dairy brunch, the farm tour, and started the cheese and wine festival. He was charter president of the Fox Cities Kiwanis Club. He also held leadership positions with Boy Scouts of America, Red Cross Disaster Commission, Sacred Heart parent teacher association, Holy Name Society, Rawhide telethon, Alice in Dairyland Pageant, Green Bay Cerebral Palsy Chapter, and coordinated the Iron Lung Movement for Polio Patients. He was a member of American Legion, Knights of Columbus, Elks Club, and Lions Club. He first worked for his parents at Harry H. Long trucking, next with his father-in-law Mathias Schaefer at Schaefer Dairy and, finally, was the marketing manager at Morning Glory Dairy until his retirement in 1990.

Donald is survived by June, his wife of 18 years, his children, Terri (Alan) Fuller (Erin, Jason-grandchildren), Fond du Lac, Harry (Ann) Long (Tarah, Michelle- grandchildren), Neenah, Patrick (Karen) Long (Rachel, Donny, Sarah, John Brevik and Alex Brevik-grandchildren), LaCrosse, Barry [fiancé Carrie Baehman (Samantha, Paige)] Long [Justin-grandson (Kathy) (Andra, Landon-great grandchildren), (Brandon-grandson)], Appleton, Kristi (Alan) Taylor (Heather, Anna-grandchildren), Corvallis, Oregon, Kellie (Bob) Manteufel (Anna, Alex-grandchildren), Appleton, Bruce (special friend Sarah Nunn) Long [Casey-grandson (fiancé Erica Schluenz) (Cayden-great grandson). (Brittney, Breanna-grandchildren)], Appleton, Alan (Tiffany) (Thorton-grandson) Long, Oshkosh. June's children, Marty (Mary) Krueger, Madison, Connie (Craig) Curtin, (Brian, Kevin, Steven, Jimmy-grandchildren) Naperville, Illinois, Darlene's children Becky (Bob) Boehlen, John Brain. He is also survived by his sisters Joan Kolosso, Marilyn (Del) Christensen, brothers Keith, Robin, Jerry (Gladys), sister-in-law Joyce Long.
Donald was preceded in death by his parents, his son Donald Long, his two previous wives Ann (Schaefer) Long and Darlene (Brain) Long, brother John Long, sister Marquette Page, and brothers-in-law Raymond Page and Robert Kolosso.
A Mass of Resurrection for Don will be held at 11:00 AM, Saturday, February 25, 2012 at St. Mary Catholic Church, Appleton with Fr. James Leary O.F.M. Cap. officiating, followed by Military Honors performed by American Legion Post #38. Interment will be in St. Mary Catholic Cemetery, Appleton. Friends may visit the family from 9 – 11 am at church on Saturday.
