Piehl, Donald "Don' D.

Donald "Don" D. Piehl, age 92 of the Township of Larrabee, Waupaca County, passed away on Sunday, April 21, 2013 at his residence.

Don was born on March 16, 1921 in Clintonville, as the son of the late Elbert and Carolina (Helms) Piehl. He graduated from Clintonville High School in 1939 and moved to Burbank, CA, where he worked at Lockheed Aircraft Corp. and attended college learning electronics and mechanical repair. In August of 1943, Don was drafted into service with the United States Army which would lead him to become part of the famed "509th" bomb group where he serviced and repaired B-29 aircrafts including his outfits' plane, the ENOLA GAY. He served his country honorably until March of 1946. Don met Virginia Niemuth and the couple were united in marriage on July 11, 1950, at the St. Martin Lutheran Church in Clintonville. The young couple moved to Steubenville, OH in 1950, where Don was enrolled in Neon Sign School, learning to work with Neon lighting. Don and Virginia then moved back to Clintonville after his schooling. He built his house and shop, starting his own successful business called Clintonville Neon Sign Co. until 1966, when he became a letter carrier for the Clintonville Post Office retiring in 1993. Don was a past member of the Clintonville Curling Club and enjoyed his honey and old cars. His hobbies included deer hunting, wood working, fishing with his children, and taking care of his vegetable garden and fruit trees. His family was his top priority and always made time to attend his children's sporting events. Don was a Christian man who took great pride in his work and his family. He held values such as quality in workmanship, integrity, and ones character in high regard. He relished in becoming known as "the guy who could fix almost anything". A truly multi-talented man who would lend a helping hand to anyone. He had no enemies, was liked by all, and will be greatly missed!
