Elizabeth "Libby" Funk, age 94, passed away on Saturday morning, August 18, 2012 at Peabody Manor, Birch Cottage. She was born on April 8, 1918 in Hanover, Illinois, daughter of the late Nathaniel and Elizabeth (Gowdy) Speer. On October 16, 1948 she married Murry Funk in Freeport, Illinois, he preceded her in death in 1987. Libby earned her Bachelor's Degree in Education from Northern Illinois University in De Kalb, after which she taught fourth grade in Freeport, Illinois in the "Bloody Fourth Ward" for some time. Libby was very active in her community: she volunteered at the American Red Cross Blood Bank, was a Past President of P.E.O., she was a Girl Scout Leader, active in the P.T.A. and V.N.A., delivered Meals on Wheels, she was a King's Daughter and a part of the Theda Clark Auxiliary. In her free time, she enjoyed gardening, reading, painting, hooking rugs, Bridge Club, and watching Packers games with her friends.
She will be sadly missed by her daughters: Marcia (Herb) Ilk, Menasha, Janice (Stanley) Burns, Duluth, MN; grandchildren: Matthew (Lori) Jansen, Menasha, Jonathan (June) Burns, Ames, IA, Sarah (Fred) Monville, Menasha; great grandchildren: Quentin and Rowan Jansen; Sean, Jacob, and Collin Burns.
In addition to her parents and her loving husband, Murry, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Ray Reed, who passed away in WWII; her sisters: Martha (Pete) Hopke, Teal (Nels) Nelson; and brother, Robert Speer.
The Funeral Service for Libby will be held on Tuesday, August 21, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at Menasha's Westgor Funeral Home. Friends will be received at the funeral home from 10:00 a.m. until the hour of service. In lieu of flowers, donations in Libby's name can be made to the
