She came from a large family. Her father was a four star general and governor of the Jiangsu Province, where Shanghai is located. Her older brother was also a general in the Chinese Army. However, the Communist Revolution in 1949 forced the family to leave China.
She came to the U.S. from Hong Kong in December 1959 on the SS President Wilson, the same ship as her future husband, Sun Pui Kwok, but they didn't actually meet until college. She went to the Church College of Hawaii (now Brigham Young University - Hawaii) where she received her Associates Degree, and further studies at Brigham Young University in Provo Utah.
As first generation immigrants to the United States, they started with nothing and endured many hardships, but through hard work and sacrifice, were able to achieve the American dream. After college, she married and lived in the Chicago area from 1965-1985. Esther worked in the banking industry throughout her career. She was an auditor for the Heritage Bank Corp in Chicago for many years before moving to Appleton where she worked for Home Savings as an internal auditor. Later she served as an investigator for the Federal Government's Resolution Trust Corporation during the Savings & Loan crisis in the late eighties and early nineties.
Retired, she enjoyed reading, gardening, playing the piano and spending time with her grandchildren. Esther is survived by her husband, Sun Kwok Sr, sisters Lisa Yam (Hong Kong), Mimi Tseng (Hong Kong), and her son's family in Naperville, Illinois: Sun Pui Kwok Jr., his wife Grace, and two grandchildren Taylor Lai and Scott Sun-Pui Kwok.
