Harriette E. Martens, age 89, passed away on Friday, July 13, 2012, at Gardens of Fountain Way in Menasha. On February 22, 1923, Harriette Elaine was born the daughter to the late James and Esther (Lentz) Frank in Spring Valley, Wisconsin. She was united in marriage to Ray Martens on November 17, 1945 in Spencer, Wisconsin; he preceded her in death on October 26, 2009. When she was younger, Harriette had gone to cosmetology school in Milwaukee and became a beautician. After a while, she did her training to become a nursing assistant and worked at Oakridge Gardens for about 10 years, retiring in 1978. Harriette liked to volunteer; helping at the senior center and mentoring handicapped children. She also was a member of the YMCA for over 20 years. Harriette enjoyed cross country skiing, sewing, painting, camping, square dancing, bowling and especially traveling. She was also a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Menasha.
Harriette will be missed by her loving daughters: Roxy Arft and Mary (Jim) Schlichting; her grandchildren: Dan "Kurt" (Anne) Arft, Todd (Jill) Arft, Jimmy (Deb) Schlichting, and Michael (Kelli Lawson) Schlichting; her great-grandchildren: Ethan, Wynter, and Karrissa.
In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by her son-in-law, Dan Arft; and a granddaughter, Kimberli Arft.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 17, 2012, at Martens-Laemmrich Funeral Home, 312 Milwaukee Street, Menasha, with Chaplain Jordan Kuczwara officiating. A Memorial Gathering will be held from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, a memorial will be established.
