Joseph "Pete" Murphy

Joseph F. "Pete" Murphy, age 88, of Appleton, passed away at Appleton Medical Center, on Monday, November 19, 2012. Pete was born on June 11, 1924, in Middletown, Rhode Island, to the late Joseph F. and Marie (Vanicek) Murphy. He married Katherine "Katy" Smith on October 8, 1949, in Jamestown, Rhode Island. Pete proudly served his country in the United States Navy during World War II, participating in five invasions in the South Pacific. In June of 2011 he was honored for his military service through the Old Glory Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. It was Pete's love of the ocean and beaches that led him to his service in the Navy. He was a member of American Legion Burns Post #38. Pete was employed at Electro-Motive, a Division of General Motors, for over three decades, retiring in 1987. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Katy; his children, Nancy (Bill) Guilbeault, Appleton; Joseph Murphy, Amelia Island, Florida; and Elizabeth (James) Carder, Yorba Linda, California; his grandchildren, Brian (Cassie) Guilbeault, Dan Guilbeault, Beth (Bill) Hanna, Mary Guilbeault, Lauren Murphy (fiancé Lucas), Matthew Murphy, Colette Murphy, Graham Murphy, Margaret Fulghum, Katherine Fulghum (fiancé Travis), Jake Fulghum, Meghan Carder, Jessica Carder and Courtney Carder; and his three great grandsons, Will, Howie and Gus Guilbeault. Pete is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Brigid and his sisters, Margaret Mattila and Barbara Culley. The Funeral Liturgy will be at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 24, 2012, at ST. BERNARD CATHOLIC CHURCH, 1617 W. Pine Street, Appleton, with Fr. Dennis Ryan officiating. Friends may call at the Wichmann Funeral Home, Appleton, on Friday from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and again directly at the church on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of services. Military honors will be observed at the church on Saturday following the mass. Interment will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Appleton. A memorial has been established in his name. The family would like to extend a sincere thank you to the staff at the Cardiac Unit of AMC.
