Juliane Peterson Wilbur
of Sayville, New York
March 9, 1921-January 5, 2013
Juliane Peterson Wilbur died peacefully in her home on Long Island, on Saturday, January 5th. She was 91 years old.
Mrs. Wilbur was born in Waupaca, Wisconsin and grew up in Menasha, Wisconsin. She attended Milwaukee State Teacher's College studying speech therapy; She met her husband, the former Justice of the Peace Thomas D. Harris, while serving as a speech therapist for wounded soldiers at Borden General Hospital, Chickashaw, Oklahoma, in 1945, where he was a patient. They settled on Long Island and had two children. Judge Harris ultimately succumbed to war injuries in 1956, and she was remarried to Grant Wilbur, a local banker in 1960. Mr. Wilbur passed away in January 1985.
Mrs. Wilbur was a well-known, active member of her community, having served for many years as a trustee of the United Methodist Church in Sayville, a volunteer for the American Red Cross, past president of the local Garden Club, a supporter of the Cabinet for the Sick and other organizations. For 23 years, she taught 4th grade at the local elementary school, retiring when the school was closed.
Mrs. Wilbur was well liked by a great many residents in her area. It always pleased her greatly when former 4th grade students of hers would stop her as she shopped in town, asking if she remembered them, saying how they enjoyed her as a teacher. She was rarely at a loss for recalling the first and last name of her former charges. She remained relatively active through the fall, notably traveling in June to visit her brother Clarence Peterson in Menasha, and to attend her sister's 90th birthday party in Plymouth, Mass in August.
She is survived by her daughter, Juliane Harris, of Ridgefield, CT, son, Patrick Harris of New York City, granddaughter, Anne Grimaldi, great grandson, John Grimaldi of Sparta, NJ, sisters Carol Callahan of Westwood, Mass, and Edith Livingston of Excelsior, MN, brother Clarence Peterson of Menasha, WI, three nieces and a nephew. She will be missed by all.
Funeral services will be held at 1st United Methodist Church, Neenah, at 12:00 noon, June 11th, lunch will follow, followed by interment at Resthaven Cemetery.
