Richard O. "Dick" Emanuel

Richard Otto Emanuel, age 85, of Appleton, passed away on April 19, 2013. He was born October 28, 1927 in Eau Claire, the son of the late Otto Herman and Ida (Piper) Emanuel. He lived, went to school, and played football, basketball, baseball, and track in Augusta, Wisconsin, graduating in 1945.
After serving in the Army, Dick attended and continued playing sports at the University of Wisconsin Eau Claire, graduating in 1951 with a teaching degree. His first teaching job was at Mondovi High School in Wisconsin where he also coached. Dick married Betty Lou Malwitz on August 16, 1952, and they moved to Appleton in 1953. Dick taught math for seventeen years, and then became assistant principle for the next seventeen years at Appleton West High School.
He touched many lives as a teacher and coach. His love of athletics allowed him to share his passion of coaching high school golf and basketball. Dick had many accomplishments through the years. The State High School Basketball Championship in 1970 and the 2000 dedication of the new gym in his name were the most treasured of his accomplishments.
He retired in 1988, spending summers up north in Eagle River, and Marco Island, Florida in the winter.
Dick and Betty were blessed with four children: Barb of Brookfield, and her four children: Megan, Matt, Mallory, and Marc Meiklejohn; Dave (Sharie) of Appleton and their three children: Erin, Nathan, and Ben Emanuel; Mary Jo of Oak Creek and her children: Jeremy and Kaylee Schull and Emily Byrd; Susan Emanuel of Ft. Myers, Florida.
Other surviving members include Dick's brother Jack (Geneva) Emanuel of Chippewa Falls, and their daughters Jennifer and her daughter Jessica, Lynette and Colette.
A Memorial service for Richard with be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, April 27, 2013 at TRINITY LUTHERAN CHURCH, 209 S. Allen Street in Appleton, with Rev. Lisa Ubbelohde officiating. Inurnment will take place at Forest Hill Cemetery in Eau Claire at a later date. The family will receive relatives and friends at church on Saturday from 9:00 AM until the time of service. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in his name. Online condolences may be offered at www.wichmannfargo.com.
