Sandy was born on November 20, 1943, in Appleton to the late Alfred and Evelyn Mellen. She grew up on the Mellen family farm in Weyauwega, and went to St. Peter Lutheran School and Winnebago Lutheran Academy High School. After attending Dr. Martin Luther College in New Ulm, MN, she taught Kindergarten at St. Peter Lutheran School in Weyauwega. She married her beloved husband Thomas on October 5, 1963. Tom and Sandy moved to Sussex where they raised their 3 children before returning to Weyauwega in 1989. Sandy was a dedicated school bus driver for over 40 years. She spent 29 of those years at the Weyauwega-Fremont School District and had just retired this past fall. She was a long time member of St. Peter Lutheran Church in Weyauwega. Sandy was an avid reader, loved to play games, cared about nature and enjoyed going out with her friends. Above all, she loved her family dearly and was very devoted to them. She took pride in the accomplishments of her grandchildren and loved spending time with them. She will be greatly missed by all of us. Sandy is survived by her husband of 54 years, Thomas; daughter Jodi (Jeff) Zibell, Sussex; two sons Jim (Lori), Sussex; and John, Weyauwega. She is also survived by 8 grandchildren: Ashley, Ryan, Savannah, Alex, Hayden, Thomas, Kevin and William. Sandy was preceded in death by her parents and her sister Sharlene (Bill) Stearns. A celebration of Sandy's life will be held on Saturday, February 24, at St. Peter Lutheran Church, 312 W. Main St., Weyauwega. Rev. Dennis Lemke will officiate. Visitation will be held at the church from 9:00 a.m. until the start of the service at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations in Sandy's memory to the St. Peter Lutheran Church general fund are appreciated.
