Schmitt, Katherine E.

Katherine E. Schmitt, age 90, of Appleton, passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 20, 2014. Katherine was born in Norwich, CT on January 21, 1924 to the late Daniel and Mary (Mullen) O'Connell. She completed her undergraduate studies at Willimantic State Teachers College in Connecticut, and received her Master's in Education at UW-Madison. On August 28, 1954, she was united in marriage to Clayton G. Schmitt. The couple enjoyed 54 years together until his death in 2008. Katherine was a teacher at Lincoln Elementary School in Appleton for 20 years, retiring in 1989. After retirement, she continued to tutor students at Lincoln Elementary for many years; she also volunteered as a tutor with Literacy Education Services in Appleton for 25 years.

She is survived by her five children: Howard Schmitt, Los Angeles, CA; Alan (Susan Zimny) Schmitt, Chicago, IL; Marie Schmitt, Minneapolis, MN; Raymond (Maria) Schmitt, Cleveland Heights, OH; and Ann (Don) Wendel, Appleton; seven grandchildren: Sydney, Kathleen, Jonathan, Daniel, Brandon, Anthony, and Ryan; and sister-in-law Margaret Schmitt, LaGrange, IL. She is further survived by nine nieces and nephews.

Katherine was preceded in death by her husband Clayton and her son Paul; three sisters: Margaret, Ann, and Mary; and two brothers: John and Geoffrey.

A Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated at 2:00 pm on Friday, April 25 at St. Bernard Catholic Church, 1617 W. Pine St., Appleton, with Father Dennis Ryan presiding. Friends may visit from 5 pm to 8 pm on Thursday, April 24 at the Brettschneider-Trettin-Nickel Funeral Chapel, and at the church on Friday from 1:00 until the time of service. Interment will take place at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established for Literacy Education Services (Appleton).

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff from Lawrence Hall and The Manor at Brewster Village for the compassionate care given to Kay.
