First, Hilda Marie

Hilda Marie Galler First, died peacefully on May 9th, 2014, surrounded by loved ones in Appleton, WI. She was a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend who will be greatly missed.

Hilda was born May 10, 1929 in Keysville, Virginia to Michael and Elsa Galler. She met her husband Henry while working at a munitions plant in World War II, and they married May 11, 1945 in Aberdeen, MD and moved to the First farm near La Crosse, WI.

A hard worker all her life, Hilda and Henry raised their children and worked together to support their family. She was proud that she was able to complete her education, obtaining her Associate Degree in food service from WWTI in La Crosse, WI.

After her husband died in 1979, she moved to Appleton, WI. A prolific, award winning writer, she was a great storyteller often basing her stories on her childhood and life experiences. She served as president of Wonewoc Spiritualist Camp. Hilda was also an active member and leader in the senior community, teaching writing workshops, and volunteering on the resident council at Rennes Health Center.

Hilda is survived by her sister Elsa Yeske; children Don (Wendy) First, Vida (Harold) Luth, Steve (Joy) First, Carol (Mitch Vesaas) May, son-in-law Greg May, and Marilyn (Michael Croman) First; her 13 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Hilda was preceded in death by her daughter Julie, husband Henry, and partner Bill Bart.

The family gives special thanks to the caring staff at Rennes Health Care, where Hilda lived for the past two years, and the staff at St. Elizabeth's Hospital. A memorial will be held Tuesday, May 13th at 3:00PM at Valley Funeral Home 2211 N. Richmond St. in Appleton; inurnment will take place at a later date in La Crosse Catholic Cemetery.

Relatives and friends may visit with the family on Tuesday from 1:00 PM until the time of service
