Derber, Mary

Mary M. Derber, of Neenah, age 86, passed away surrounded by her family on Sunday, June 1, 2014, at Theda Clark Medical Center. She was born June 13, 1927 in Rhinelander, WI, daughter of the late Earl and Helen (Knight) Wohlfarth.

Mary was a 1948 graduate of the Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. She married Glen Derber on June 20, 1948 and they moved to Madison, Wisconsin where she began her nursing career. After her first child, Bruce, they moved to Neenah. She had a lifelong fulfilling career as a Registered Nurse working in the medical surgical unit at Theda Clark Memorial Hospital until she retired at age 65.

Mary had many, many long-time friends. She was especially close to the three couples that made up her and Glen's card club of 60 years, traveling to one another's homes in Oshkosh, Wautoma and Neenah for their monthly gatherings sharing life, food, laughter and sheepshead. She and Glen chose to stay in the same home their entire lives because of the close-knit community of friends in the neighborhood, for themselves and their children.

Reading and gardening were two of her passions that she passed on to her children. She loved poetry and collecting old books. Mary was also very faithful and served the Lord with her caring ways her entire life. She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Neenah all the years she lived here.

Survivors include three children: Bruce Derber, Jacqueline Derber, Suzanne (Bill) Tanguay; a granddaughter, Mara Tanguay; a sister-in-law, Edith (Del) Piel; several nieces and nephews; and her precious cat, Mr. Jingles.

Mary was preceded in death by a brother, Frederick; and a sister, Joyce Downs; and her husband, Glen who passed away last year on April 20.

The funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, June 6, 2014, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 200 N. Commercial St., Neenah, with The Rev. Paul L. Holte officiating. The visitation will be held at the church from 10:00 AM until the hour of service. A memorial is being established in her name. Interment will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery.
