Shackleton, Verna D.
Verna D. Shackleton passed away peacefully in her residence at Fox Valley Lutheran Homes, Appleton, on June 16, 2014. Verna was born in rural Augusta, WI on May 5, 1930 to the late Harry and Eula (Arries) Fristad. She graduated from Colby High School, Class of 1948. She completed 10 years in 4-H work. In 1950, Verna married Jack R. Shackleton and their marriage was blessed with three children. She attended Northwest Institute of Medical Technology in Minneapolis. Upon graduating, she accepted medical employment in Appleton. After working in the medical field as a Medical Assistant, Verna was employed in 1981 by the Outagamie Department of Health and Human Services, in the Financial Aid Department, as an Economic Support Specialist II. She retired in January 1996, and was living at Fox Valley Lutheran Homes, on North Linwood Avenue. In April 1996 she became Building Manager of the complex, retiring in 2013.
She was an avid Packer fan, loved reading, and gardening in their Town of Menasha East side home from 1959 to 1978. During that time, Verna was a Junior High Youth leader at the UCC on Nicolet Blvd. in Neenah. She volunteered for the Neenah-Menasha Red Cross Blood Bank, scheduling volunteers to work for 10 years. She loved traveling to Philatelic Shows around the country exhibiting her Churches on German Stamps. She was a long-time secretary of the Collectors of Religion Stamps Society (COROS). Verna was a life-time member of the Outagamie Philatelic Society. She received several awards for her various philatelic endeavors in societies from 1976 to 2014.
Verna is survived by her children; Connie Bikowski, of Little Chute, Todd (Karen) Shackleton, of Appleton, and Jeff (Jane) Shackleton of Neenah, grandchildren; Cheryl Bikowski, Plover, Chad Bikowski, Little Chute, Emily Shackleton, Green Bay, Rebecca Shackleton, Minocqua and Allison Shackleton, Neenah. She is further survived by her sisters; Joan (Peter) Goeldner, Anchorage, AK, Norma Weisz, Downers Grove, IL, Selma (Endre) Ivan, Indian Head Park, IL, Sandra (Jack) Engel, Chassell MI, as well as many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Jack in December, 1994, son in law, Cliff Bikowski, brother, Thorwald Fristad, and brother in law, Frank Weisz.
Friends and family may call on Thursday, July 3, 2014 from 12:30 to 1:30 PM at Fox Valley Lutheran Homes, 425 N. Linwood Ave. Appleton. A memorial service for Verna will follow at 2:00PM in the Star of Hope Chapel at Highland Memorial Park, 3131 N. Richmond St., Appleton, with Pastor Robert Herder officiating.
A memorial fund has been established for Fox Valley Lutheran Homes, an Independent Living Complex Verna dearly loved.
