Hazel Kane, 92, passed away on Thursday, June 26, 2014.
Hazel was born in Racine, WI on June 5th, 1922 to James and Bessie Nelson, and was the beloved oldest sister of Dolores and Isabel. A proud widow of Robert Stewart, Air Force Captain and casualty of WWII 1945, she married John Kane, and raised two children Gary Stewart and Carla Inocelda. As a young woman she was a talented artist.
Hazel's life was marked by a desire to serve people in need. She founded and hosted the first Al-Anon meetings in the greater Appleton area. Hazel also served as a Community Supportive Care worker for people with mental illness.
Her biggest dream was realized in 1988 when she founded Friendship Place, a drop-in site where people with mental illness could meet to socialize and engage in a variety of activities. After ten years, she turned over the directorship of Friendship Place to Julie Grondahl and Candice Luedtke, and was awarded Outstanding Volunteer of the Year by The National Alliance for the Mentally Ill.
Later in life Hazel enjoyed many other activities like traveling with her late husband John Kane, writing poetry, belonging to a domino group, and singing with the YMCA "Y-Nots." During this time she formed close friendships, in particular with Antoinette (Toni) Daugherty.
Hazel is preceded in death by her second husband John Kane in 1997, and survived by two children Gary Stewart (Joyann) and Carla Inocelda; five grandchildren Elizabeth Stewart, Matthew Stewart (Kirsten), Camille Thompson (Michael), Theresa Inocelda (Matt Meredith), Brian Inocelda (Amber); and three great grandchildren William Meredith, Henry Thompson, and Brielle Inocelda.
