Schuldes, Gene F.

"The most important example a father can set for his children is to love their mother."

Gene Francis Schuldes of Appleton passed from this earth into the loving arms of our Lord and Savior surrounded by his family on January 15, 2013 at 7:22 a.m. Gene was born on September 22, 1932 to Francis and Thelma (Kluge) Schuldes at his Grandparent's home in Hortonville, Wisconsin.

Gene graduated Appleton High School in 1950 and was immediately hired by the Post-Crescent Newspaper. In 1951, he enlisted in the U. S. Coast Guard and his assignment took him to Duluth, Minnesota, where he was in charge of the South Pier Lighthouse. In 1953, (the third year of his hitch) he met Donna Scott. After being honorably discharged in 1954, he resumed his work at the Post-Crescent and retired from his 44 ½ year career at the Post-Crescent in 1994 as a foreman/supervisor in the Composing Room.

On August 20, 1955, Gene married Donna Jean Scott (he loved his Donna) at St. Therese Parish, Appleton. After drawing up the plans with their contractor, they moved into their Taylor Street home on March 7, 1959. There, they raised their five wonderful children; his happiness was complete!

He was Father to Scott Martin (Tricia), parents of Matthew, Timothy (Alison), Kathryn (Thomas), and Stephen; Jeanine Marie (Bill) Lindeke, parents of Christopher, Jennifer, Michael, and Sara; Michael Francis (Susan), parents of Stephanie and Hugh; John Patrick (Melanie), parents of Madeline and Samuel; and Brian Joseph (Britt), parents of Marisa. He absolutely adored his children and grandchildren. Oh, how we will miss him!

Gene lived for his wife and family, always putting them first. He was honest, humble, giving, and hard-working - an extraordinary man. He was our gentle giant; most caring and respectful of others; and, will be missed by all who knew him.

Since 1955, Gene has made donations to the Community Blood Bank whenever the need arose. Since 1992, the records show that Gene donated 107 pints of whole blood (which served three people with plasma, whole blood, and platelets); and 72 apheresis units (plasma/platelets). He was very proud to have helped so many.

Gene was an avid sports fan - "Go Brewers, Badgers and Packers". Together, he and Donna attended Packer Games for 47 years missing only during the strike. They attended the Ice Bowl on December 31, 1967, and both Super Bowls in New Orleans (1996) and San Diego (1997). Gene preferred the outcome of the New Orleans game! For many years, Gene played basketball and softball on teams throughout the Fox Valley. He was a member of St. Pius X Parish since 1960, and was involved in volunteerism in every aspect at St. Pius X Parish, including coaching the 8th grade basketball team. He also took pride in his Knights of Columbus and American Legion memberships. Working with the Fox Cities Convention Bureau Staff as a volunteer was one of his favorite things to do.

Gene is survived by his Wife of 57 years, Donna; his Daughter and four Sons; thirteen Grandchildren; Mother-in-Law, Elma French; Sisters, Susan (Tom Toonen), Mary (Joe Spitz), Kaye (Dave Henning), and Kathy (Jim Riley); Sisters-in-Law, Joyce Schuldes, Vicki (Roger Goode), and Gale (Clemens) Solarz; many nieces and nephews, cousins, and dear friends.

He was preceded in death by his Parents; Father-in-Law, Martin Scott; Brother, Richard Schuldes; Grandparents, Hugo & Lillian Schuldes and Oscar & Emily Kluge; Aunts and Uncles, and many friends and relatives.

The Rite of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Rev. Thomas J. Farrell, with Rev. John H. Van Deuren concelebrating, at 11:30 on Saturday, January 19, 2013, at St. Pius X Catholic Church, 500 West Marquette Street, Appleton, WI. Full Military Honors performed by American Legion Post #138 will immediately follow.

The visitation will be before Mass from 9:00 until the time of service.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for St. Pius X Parish, Appleton.

The inurnment will take place at Highland Memorial Park Mausoleum at a later date.

The family would like to thank Heartwood Homes and Appleton Health Care for their loving nursing care.

You are the light in my life, Gene! Forever, Donna
