The Guest Book is expired.
Gladys (Bartels) Suess, age 90, Neenah, WI, died Friday, March 8, 2013, at Theda Clark Medical Center, Neenah.
She was the devoted wife of Robert D. Suess for nearly 68 years.
Gladys was born Dec. 12, 1922, at Coleman, WI. Parents were Henry A. and Marie (Wuschick) Bartels. Gladys was raised in Green Bay, WI, where she graduated from East High School in 1941. She then became employed as a secretary with a Green Bay insurance agency.
She married husband Bob July 8, 1945, at Grace Lutheran Church in Green Bay. After Bob's discharge from World War II Army service, they resided in Lake Forest, IL, from August 1945 through 1948, where she was Secretary at St. Thomas Episcopal Church.
From mid-1949 to mid-1951, they lived in Silver City, NM, where she was employed at Grant County clerk and agricultural agent offices. She and Bob moved to Neenah in August-1951.
Her survivors include husband Bob; daughter Lori Suess, Neenah, WI; grandson Gregory Yost (Jamie Borras) and great granddaughter, Layla Grace Yost, Phoenix, AZ; and sister Eileen (Mrs. Lee) Stouter, Norfolk, VA.
Preceding her in death were father Henry A. Bartels, June 11, 1965; brother Henry G. Bartels, Nov. 8, 1992; mother Marie Bartels, Nov. 28, 1992; and son Larry J. Suess, June 1, 2001.
Gladys was a member of St. Timothy Lutheran Church, Menasha, WI, from 1951-1964. She became a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Neenah, in 1964. At Our Savior's, she was secretary of the Mission Auxiliary, with which she was an active quilter; and participated with Martha Circle women's group, Varsity retirement club, Bethel Series bible administration and several bible study activities.
She was a member of the Neenah-Menasha YMCA where she had been a long-time water exerciser to counter the lifelong challenge of rheumatoid arthritis.
Gladys also enjoyed activity with a Neenah ceramics group. In earlier years, she pursued hobbies of lapidary and re-upholstery.
She was highly interested in current events and avidly read two newspapers daily. She thoroughly enjoyed travel to other parts of the country and world.
Her abiding interest was in her children for whom she was always a loving, concerned and available mother. This meant being an active camper, swimmer, skater and tobogganist, plus other family pursuits. In particular, she relished the combination of hard work and recreation at the family cottage near Townsend in Oconto County. Her creativity and persistence are evidenced there by rock retaining walls that she fashioned in 1960.
Glady's funeral service will be Friday, March 15, 2013, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, 809 S. Commercial St., Neenah, at 11:00 a.m. with the Rev. Catherine A.K. Mode officiating. Visitation will be 9:30 a.m. till time of service Friday at the church. Fellowship with family and attendees will follow the service at the church. Burial will be at Oak Hill Cemetery, Neenah. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Our Savior's Lutheran Church and the Neenah-Menasha YMCA.
