Corinne Elizabeth (Baker) Shockey, age 85, passed away at the Wisconsin Veterans Home in King, Wisconsin on Thursday, March 7, 2013. Corinne was born in Urbana, Ohio on November 4, 1927, daughter of the late Harry and Anna (Cone) Baker. Corinne graduated from high school in 1944, and married James Joseph "Joe" Shockey on February 26, 1946.
Corinne and Joe moved to Stevens Point, Wisconsin, in 1965. Their home on the Wisconsin River offered access to the island "Sugar Camp," where each spring they made maple syrup, a tradition they lovingly shared with family and friends.
In 1982 they moved to Appleton, Wisconsin. A mother of six, Corinne also worked for H.C. Prange Co., and was a founding member in the Appleton quilting guild, the Darting Needles. In July of 2011, Corinne and Joe relocated to the Wisconsin Veterans Home in King, Wisconsin, where the couple celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary together in 2012.
Corinne loved spending summers at the cottage on Murphy Lake, along with Joe, the grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. An avid bird watcher, Corinne loved feeding the hummingbirds, and enjoyed discovering new birds at the feeder. She was fond of seeing the first trillium of spring, waiting for the irises to bloom, and knew where all the best blueberry patches were. She took inspiration from the Hiawatha Forest for her many beautiful, award-winning quilts and hand woven baskets. A voracious reader, Corinne shared her love of literature with her family, a legacy she lovingly passed on to her children and grandchildren. Corinne was a passionate cook, and authored a cookbook of many of her favorite recipes, treasured by her family.
She is survived by a daughter: Beth (Dan) Shockey-Woll of River Falls; sons: Mike (Penny) Shockey of Rowlett, Texas; Reed (Sue) Shockey of Raleigh, North Carolina; Joe (Cheryl) Shockey of Appleton, Wisconsin; and Andrew Shockey of Appleton. There are also thirteen beloved grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. Corinne was preceded in death by her husband, Joe; daughter, Rebecca; sister, Dorothy; and brother, Thomas.
A private service will be held by the family. In lieu of gifts or flowers, the family request donations be offered to:
The Wisconsin Veterans Home - MacArthur Hall Activity Fund, Attn: Tina Ewing
N2665, County Rd QQ
King, WI 54946
The family would like to express their deepest gratitude to Dr. Guenther and Dr. Bellg for their truly exceptional care, and to the staff at King — in particular the people of MacArthur 2nd & 3rd floors. The care and friendship Corinne experienced at King was outstanding, and the heartfelt condolences expressed by these wonderful people was a great comfort to the family.
