Paul Melvin Perkins, 88, passed away on April 4, 2013. He was born to Edward Thomas Perkins and Mable E Ames Perkins on March 3, 1925 in Toledo, OH. He married Marceline Roberts on November 2, 1946 who preceded him in death (March 13th, 2007) following 60 years of marriage.
Paul graduated from Adrian High School in 1943. He was elected to the All State Football Team playing as one of Adrian's "Midget Guards" (5',6" and 135 lbs.). His team also voted him Most Valuable Player in 1942. He also played a season (1948) with the Semi Pro, Big Reds of the Adrian Athletic Club. He served in the US Army 1943 to 1946 and earned his honorable discharge after serving with the 396th Field Artillery Battalion of the 16th Armored Division in France.
He worked 20 years as an auto mechanic and another 21 years truck repair at Fisher Body before retiring. He then volunteered with Habitat for Humanity and helped build 16 homes in 3 different counties in Michigan. He was 74 when he helped with his last one. In 2000 he moved to Charlotte and continued to do volunteer work with St. Vincent De Paul food bank and helped with the construction of the Eaton Area Senior Center.
Throughout his life he was involved with Boy Scouts, the Elks and Moose Clubs of Adrian, St. Josephs Catholic Church in Adrian and St. Mary's Catholic Church in Charlotte, Camping clubs, Fiddlers and Dulcimer groups
He had a great love for music and his banjo. He shared this at countless campfires, birthdays, anniversaries, jamborees and evenings at home.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his 3 brothers and 1 sister, Edwin Milton Perkins 1908-1970, Clare Carlos Perkins 1911-1976, Kenneth Arthur Perkins 1911-1982, and Alta Mable (Zinc) Rogers 1922-1987.
Survivors include his dear companion, Marilyn Royston of Charlotte; sons, Robert (Mary) Perkins of West Des Moines, IA; Karen (Earl) Hixson of Lansing, MI; Pauline Perkins of Charlotte, MI; Kenneth Perkins of Tucson, AZ; Michael (Cathy) Perkins of Dallas, TX; and Ronald Perkins of Charlotte, MI; 15 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services for Paul will be held Monday, April 8, 2013, at 11 a.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church, Charlotte with Father Francis Mossholder officiating. Burial will follow at Maple Hill Cemetery in Charlotte. Visitations will be held at Pray Funeral Home on Saturday and Sunday, April 6 and 7, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. with Rosary to follow the last visitation on Sunday evening.
Memorial contributions are suggested to Eaton Community Hospice and VFW National Home for Children.
