HOPWOOD, THELMA - McMurray
HOPWOOD THELMA Thelma was born at home on June 25, 1925, in Jefferson, PA, a daughter of the late Joseph and Veturia DePetro. She departed this life peacefully on Sunday, May 1, 2016, surrounded by her family. She was the widow of John "Jack" Hopwood, whom she married in 1952. He passed away June 18, 1971. Left to cherish her memory are son, Jack (Sue Carl); and daughters, Grace (George Ward) and Wendy (Victor Tonas). Deceased is her youngest son, Timothy. She is also survived by her adored grandchildren, Si and Hilary Bishop (Carl Malek), John and Adrian Foody and Jaclyn Hopwood. Also survived by sisters, Llora (Don) and Janet; and a brother, Joe. She leaves many beloved nieces and nephews and her dearest friend, Velma Jordan. Her beloved youngest brother, Rob is deceased. Thelma was a farm girl at heart and a seasoned world traveler with a penchant for beautiful clothes and jewelry. She was just as comfortable berry picking and attending the county fairs as she was flying the Concorde and traveling the Orient Express. She loved to eat and hated to cook, but somehow managed to pull off some spectacular holiday dinners. She canned tomatoes and made excellent apple pies from Pappy's apples. She left the family farm in Independence at age 16 and got her first paying job in Washington, PA. She then moved to Pittsburgh, working for Miller Printing and Machinery in the payroll office and living at the Evangeline Hotel for Young Women. She was proud of her time spent acting at the Pittsburgh Playhouse. While her kids were growing up Thelma loved having adventures with them and her nieces and nephews. We fondly remember piling into her station wagon to go to the Blue Moon Drive-In or Brownlee's Ice Cream or sneaking us out of bed for midnight swims. She let us hide the unwashed dinner dishes under the bushes so that our father wouldn't see them, just so we had more time to play on the farm before dark. She was a kid at heart. In 2004, she reconnected with the first love of her life, Dr. Donald Youngdahl whom she met in 1942 while working for the IRS in Washington, PA. They parted ways when Don left for the War. For their second act they enjoyed 12 glorious years going to the opera, traveling or planning their next trip. Sadly, Don passed away in November 2015. Friends and family are welcome Friday, May 6, 2016, from 2-8 p.m. at CREMATION & FUNERAL CARE, 3287 Washington Rd., McMurray, PA 15317, 724-260-5546. Funeral service is May 7, 2016, at 11 a.m. at the funeral home led by Fr. Pierre Sodini. She will be laid to rest in Independence Cemetery.
