(Drake) Genella; loving father of Janet (Dannie) Boyd, Ralph (Roberta) Genella, Thomas (Dina) Genella, Lynne (Daniel) MacConnell, Mary (Therese) Genella and Michael (Deborah) Genella; grandfather of 15; great-grandfather of nine. He was a longtime employee of Westinghouse Broadcasting. Ralph served in the US Navy during the Korean War. "Herky", Dennis (Patty), Daniel, Debora Cumiskey and Brian (Carol) Golebiewski; cherished grandmother of Danielle (Al), James, Owen (Kristen), Denny, Jessica (Christopher), Sherry, Lisa (Mikie) and Erica; six great-grandchildren; sister of the late Rose Somerfeld, Henrietta Rotondo and Bernard Drozinski; also survived by nieces and nephews. KALAS GARY PAUL Age 58, of Augusta, Georgia, formerly of Monroeville, on Sunday, August 30, 2015. He was born July 5, 1957, in Pittsburgh, son of the late Bill Kalas and Marie Kalas. Gary had an extensive career with Holiday Park Shop N' Save for nearly 35 years before he moved to Georgia. He will always be remembered lovingly by co-workers, friends, and family. Gary's legacy is his beloved patch blankets. He has amassed a total of 27 hand-sewn patch blankets over the years. Some of his most memorable ones include his collection of World War II unit patches, NFL team and Super Bowl patches, MLB team and World Series collections and his Disney collections. He is survived by his mother, Marie Kalas; his sister, Kathleen Socrates and husband, Bill Socrates of Augusta, GA; his beloved niece, Kristina Mei Gripko and husband, Chris; beloved nephew, Robert Mei and wife, Katy; and beloved nephew, Drew Socrates, a USC student in Columbia, South Carolina; and family dog, Missy. KARANOVICH, DONALD - Irwin  
KARANOVICH DONALD Age 93, of North Huntingdon, died at home Thursday, September 3, 2015. He was born March 23, 1922, in Shafton, a son of the late John and Sara Banjac Karanovich. Don was a retired physical education teacher for the Norwin School District and had also been a teacher for the Trafford School District where he coached several sports for both schools. He was an Army veteran of WWII, and was awarded a battlefield commission to First Lieutenant and a bronze star for valor for service during the Battle of the Bulge and Remagen Bridgehead. He graduated from the University of Pittsburgh where he played football and was an active alumnus assisting with sports programs where he and a group of friends requested and watched films of Pitt football games for fun. This impromptu gathering led to the establishment of the Laurel Golden Panther Club. Don later became treasurer of the organization and was honored with the Alumni of Distinction in 2008. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Irwin, the Golden Panthers Alumni Association, and the Westmoreland County Coaches Association. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, George and Albert Karanovich; and sisters, Mildred Bozich, Rose Lawrence, Josephine Dvorsky, and Sadie Rahne. He is survived by his wife, Evelyn Shuster Karanovich; sons, Donald Karanovich, Jr. and his wife, Launa of California, Mark Karanovich and his wife, Lisa of Virginia, and Kurt G. Karanovich and his wife, Gail of Greensburg; ten grandchildren; four great- grandchildren; a sister, Bess Perkins of North Huntingdon; also nieces and nephews. There will be no viewing. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday at the First Presbyterian Church, 617 Main Street, Irwin. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The University of Pittsburgh in honor of Don Karanovich, Office of Institutional Advancement, 128 N. Craig St., Pgh., PA 15260. Beside his mother, he is survived by his former wife, Laura Lopez, Mesa, AZ; two sons, Conrad (Rachel) Oliver, and Carson Oliver, all of New York City, NY; two daughters, Carla (Kahleed) Matmati, Fort Wayne, IN and Celina Oliver, Mesa, AZ; one brother, Chris Oliver, Pittsburgh; and three grandchildren, Sophia, Moses, and Noah Matmati.
