On Thursday, April 8, 2004, Anita M. Ackerman, age 94, of New Hope Assisted Living in Avalon. Preceded in death by three sisters, she is survived by loving nephews Peter W. Fairbairn & his wife Christiane of Houston, TX, Donald R. Fairbairn & his wife Phyllis of Wyckoff, NJ and Robert Fairbairn & his wife Gail of East Granby, CT; 11 grand nieces & nephews and 21 great grand nieces & nephews and by dear friend Sue Bumer. The family would like to thank New Hope for their loving & tender care. A native of Erie, PA, Ms. Ackerman was a talented artist, in her school years studying under Eugene Ivard, a contemporary of Norman Rockwell and famous for his illustrations in the Saturday Evening Post. She was a graduate of Edinboro State Teachers College (now Edinboro Univ.) with a degree in education. She relocated to the Pgh Area to become an art teacher in the North Hills School District, first at Samuel Hamilton Jr. High, then at West View High School, retiring after 30 years. Known for her unique crafting of dolls from different cultures of the world, she continued her craft into retirement, gaining notice from the Univ. of Pgh's "Generations Together" program, in which Ms. Ackerman displayed her dolls at local schools to teach children about their heritage. Friends invited Monday, 11am-1pm, in the THE ORION C. PINKERTON FUNERAL HOME, INC. A GOLDEN RULE MEMBER FIRM. 1014 California Avenue Avalon, (North Boros). Funeral services Monday afternoon at 1:30 in Northminster Presbyterian Church, 45 N. Fremont Ave., Bellevue, PA 15202. Memorial contributions are suggested to her church, where she had been a long-time member.
