BIERER BETTY LAVINA
Age 95, of Silver Spring, MD, formerly of Pittsburgh, PA, died November 20, 2012 at Montgomery Hospice Casey House, Rockville, MD. She was preceded in death by her sister, June Meyers Montgomery; and twin brother, Jack (Agnes Becker); and nephew, John Bierer. She is survived by caring and loving nephews, Joseph Bierer (Karen), James Bierer (Maggie); and niece, Mary Jo; wife of John Bierer; Betty will be fondly remembered by grand and great-grandnieces and nephews. Betty dedicated her life to teaching. She taught 21 years in Pittsburgh and 20 years in Silver Spring, MD. Betty served her country in the U.S. Navy
where she trained as a Gunner and Aviation Mechanic during WWII
in Hawaii. She was a member of The American Youth Hostel and the Girl Scouts of America. She helped blaze the Baker Trail and was the first woman to hike the entire trail in 1951. She was an avid bicyclist, competing in many races and was the only female contestant to compete with 22 men in Pittsburgh's second annual 12 hour bicycle classic sponsored by the American Youth Hostels. A grand adventurer, she climbed the Grand Tetons and Mt. Fuji. She was a White House volunteer during her retirement to the Clinton administration answering letters from children. The family wishes to thank the staff of the Montgomery Hospice Casey House for their professionalism and care.
