Of Highland Park, on Tuesday, February 4, 2014, age 92. Beloved husband of Jane Nelson Partanen; father of Karen Ellen Partanen and partner Irene Craig of Toronto, Kirsten Grace Partanen of Ottawa and the late Richard Albert Partanen; grandfather of Dorothey Partanen-Craig of Toronto. Carl did his undergraduate work at Lewis and Clark College and received his master's and Ph.D. from Harvard University. He was a Research Associate at the Children's Cancer Research Foundation in Boston, MA, now the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, from 1957 to 1961 when he came to the University of Pittsburgh as Associate Professor. He continued at Pitt as a researcher and teacher for 43 years, chairing the Department of Biology from 1963 to 1970. Carl served in the US Army Air Force during WWII, building airfields in North Africa and Europe. A Funeral Service will be held at Shadyside Presbyterian Church on Friday, February 14, 2014, at 11 a.m. Private Interment will take place at a later date in Fife Cemetery, Keene, Ontario.
