DON BALMAN BLENKO

BLENKO DON BALMAN
May 25, 1929 to May 20, 2013. Don Balman Blenko, a long time Haverford resident, died May 20, 2013, after several years of declining health. Born May 25, 1929 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, he was the son of the late Walter John Blenko and Ardis Jones Blenko. His grandfather, William J. Blenko, founded Blenko Glass Company, known for its artistic hand-blown glass. Don and his wife, Kitty celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary with family and friends prior to his passing. After meeting at age 8 through their parents, who were long time friends, they dated through college and were married following Don's second year of law school. Their 50th anniversary celebration in Bar Harbor, Maine was a memorable occasion for all in attendance. Don and Kitty were devoted parents noted for their loyal support of countless athletic, church, school and scouting events during their children's school years. He will be greatly missed by his family. An excellent student, Don attended Shady Side Academy, was a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Amherst College and earned his Juris Doctor from the University of Pennsylvania. A Philadelphian since law school, his career specializing in corporate and antitrust law included positions at Morgan Lewis and Bockius, Philco-Ford and Arco Chemical. He served in the US Navy Reserve following law school. After retiring, he volunteered for Meals on Wheels and ElderHostel. Many of Don's happiest times were with his family, particularly vacationing for many years on Nantucket Island, Massachusetts, where he indulged in his lifelong enjoyment of crossword puzzles and reading. He was a Philadelphia Orchestra loyalist, maintaining season tickets with his wife, Kitty for more than 50 years. Other long-standing local affiliations included the Amherst Alumni Association, Haverford Civic Association, Phi Beta Kappa Club, and Sons and Daughters of Nantucket. Don also was a lifelong Pittsburgh Pirates and Steelers fan through good times and bad. He enjoyed owning and managing a fantasy baseball league team for many years. Don is survived by his wife, Kitty; his son, David, his wife, Kathleen and their children, Jennifer and Peter, of Rancho Palos Verdes, California; his son, Thomas and his wife, Rinat Shimshi and their children, Abigail and Elizabeth, of San Jose, California; his daughter, Dr. Katherine Blenko, her husband, Dr. Joseph Belanoff and their children, Edward and Julia, of Woodside, California; his son, Don, Jr., his wife, Marcia and their children, Sarah, Katherine and Nicholas, of Wellesley, Massachusetts; and his son, James and his wife, Shubha Pathak, of Rockville, Maryland; his brother, Walter; and nephews, John and Andrew and their families. The Funeral Service will be held at Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church Friday, May 31, 2013. Interment will be on Monday, June 3, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. In The Homewood Cemetery, 1599 South Dallas Ave., Pittsburgh, PA 15217.
