86, of Pittsburgh, passed away on Monday, January 28, 2013. Known by his friends as Don or Donny, he was born in Wilkinsburg, PA to the late Joseph and Dorothy (Andrews) Cunningham on November 20, 1926. A brilliant man, Don graduated high school early, enlisting in the Army Air Force at age seventeen. Upon discharge he went on to attend the University of Pittsburgh, where he received a Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering. He married the late Ann Marie (Webb) Cunningham and they lived together happily until her passing in 1987. Don served in the Army Air Force as a B-29 flight engineer prior to the end of WWII. He went on to devote over 50 years working for one company, starting his career with the then Edwin L. Wiegand and Company as an electrical engineer where he developed multiple patents, including Heating Cable. After retiring as V.P. of Electrical Engineering for a division of Emerson Electric, he stayed on as a consultant with Emerson for several years. Don was also a volunteer firefighter for 15 yrs at the Churchill Fire Department, serving as Fire Chief for several years. He was a member of the Wilkinsburg B.P.O.E. Elks Lodge #577, was elected, and served as Exulted Ruler. An avid runner, he ran in multiple marathons, including his favorite, the Marine Corps Marathon. He enjoyed walking or jogging with friends every morning at the Woodland Hills H.S. track, bird watching from his back deck, and was known to be a great Steeler's fan. He was a very loving and involved father and grandfather. A selfless man, he was always positive in all respects, a true cheerleader, and positive role model to all who knew him. He will be deeply missed and remembered for generations to come. Preceded in death by his children, Bruce Cunningham and Carol Cunningham; and grandson Matthew Cunningham, he is survived by his loving children, Mark Cunningham, Jill (Cunningham) Stewart; son-in-law, David Stewart; and his adoring grandchildren, Gwendolyn Cunningham and spouse Matthew Sichel, Emily Cunningham, Christine Cunningham, Marcus Cunningham, Katherine (Katie) Stewart, Cameron Stewart, and Connor Stewart. He loved and cared greatly for his devoted caregiver, Sara Pothoff and her son Asher, both of whom provided him much love, comfort, and happiness. Viewing will be 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 8, 2013, with an 11 a.m. Funeral Service Saturday, Feb. 9, 2013 at MAURICE L. KNEE, LTD.
