ESTELLE COHEN

COHEN ESTELLE
Age 87, formerly of Squirrel Hill, passed away peacefully on October 12, 2012, in the Masonic Village. She is the beloved wife of the late Ralph Cohen. Estelle studied art at the Chicago Art Institute from the age of 9 to 17. She majored in studio art at Milwaukee-Downer College and worked as an interior designer until her retirement in the 1990s. She and Ralph traveled in Europe after their retirement. Her favorite trips were walking tours in the English country side and river cruises on the Danube, Moselle and Rhine Rivers, and also from Vienna to Amsterdam. Ralph and Estelle moved to the Masonic Village in 2005 and enjoyed living in their Villa until his illness in 2009. They took part in many of the events and activities of retirement living. When Ralph died in 2010, after a year as a patient in the Valley Care Masonic Village, Estelle wanted to express her appreciation for the excellent care he had received. She then volunteered to draw portraits of the patients in pen and ink and water color. She discovered that working one-on-one with each subject was especially pleasing for them; since she was focusing her attention solely on them for 15 minutes and talking to them to keep their interest. She has completed thirty portrait sketches. Estelle was a member of the art group and served as chairman of the book club on campus. She was also a member of the American Society of Botanical Artists and a founder of the local chapter. Services for Estelle are private. H.P.
