CLARKE FLORA H.
Of Friendship Village, Upper St. Clair, formerly of Canonsburg and a long-time resident of McMurray, died on the 12th day of January, 2013, after a short illness. She was born February 21, 1921 in West Newton, the second child of Paul and Magdalina (Wagner) Hofmann. She attended the West Newton Schools, skipping a grade, and graduating with honors. Subsequently, despite having the use of only one hand as a result of a childhood injury, she graduated from the McKeesport Hospital School of Nursing, No. 1 in her class, and being voted "Outstanding Nurse". Thereafter, she obtained a Bachelors Degree and Masters Degree in Nursing. She worked at Children's Hospital and Mercy Hospital, and thereafter, returned to her alma mater. Retiring from full-time nursing, she did private duty for various local doctors and also was a substitute nursing teacher at Washington VoTech. Due to her nursing ability, on five separate occasions over the years, she saved the lives of a neighborhood child, two neighbors, and two other acquaintances. On May 16, 1944, she married Clifford W. Clarke, P.E., who died on December 28, 1988. She was an original member of Trinity Methodist Church in McMurray, was instrumental in the formation of the Peters Township Public Library and served on its Board of Directors for many years, was a Washington County Republican Committee woman, an accomplished bridge player, a devoted and knowledgeable Steeler fan, and a supporter of the Mel Blount Youth Home. She is survived by her son, Robert N. Clarke, Esquire and his wife, Victoria (Dally) of McMurray; a grandson, Jordan of Canonsburg; two granddaughters, Ashley of Upper St. Clair and Amanda Greene (Daniel) of Avella and their child, her great-grandson, Dexter; she is also survived by her nephew, John (Jack) Peters of California and her beloved niece, Jane Peters, of Pittsburgh. Deceased in addition to her husband is her sister and brother-in-law, Grace and John Peters, and a nephew, Paul Peters. Funeral arrangements by BEINHAUERS, 724-941-3211. Friends welcome at 2828 Washington Road, McMurray, 15317, from 2-4 and 6-8 on Wednesday. A Funeral Service will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday at the West Newton Cemetery Chapel, 210 Vernon Drive, West Newton, 15089, where interment will follow.
