Of Mt. Lebanon and formerly of Mt. Washington, suddenly on June 8, 2014. Wife of the late Donald K. Ramsey; beloved mother of Scott (Suzanne) Ramsey and Penny (late Michael) Miller; sister of Barbara Barth and Pam (Jim) Christner; grandmother of Michael (Susan) Miller of Virginia and Ben Miller of Ohio. Joan loved all manner of animals from an early age, and nurtured any injured or orphaned animal that came her way, including bats, birds, reptiles and squirrels. She taught her children an abiding love of nature through long walks in the Chatham Village woods. Joan considered any neighbor, store clerk or passerby her friend, and was described by everyone who knew her as a kind, generous, happy, and gentle soul. Joan loved photography and worked as a wedding photographer, and also took thousands of pictures of family and friends. She loved travel and had many fond memories of family and friend vacations on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. She traveled to South Africa in 2000 on a family photographic safari. Her home was always full of pets and she is survived by her cat, Buddy, a goldfish, and three hermit crabs. She was known as the pet lady and adults and children in her neighborhood considered her the go-to person for questions on animal care. Joan also loved gardening and both her city-raised kids became avid gardeners and farmers. Friends and family are invited to a celebration of her life at the WILLIAM SLATER II FUNERAL SERVICE, (412-563-2800), 1650 Greentree Rd., Pittsburgh, PA 15220, on June 27, 2014, from 1 p.m.- 5 p.m. Service at 5 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Oglebay Foundation (for the Good Zoo Vet Hospital Fund), 465 Lodge Drive, Wheeling, WV 26003 or to the Western Pennsylvania Humane Society, 1101 Western Ave., Pittsburgh, PA 15233.
