Age 88, of Grayslake, died Sunday, October 13, 2013, at Lake Forest Hospital. She was born in Scott Township, PA to Fred L. and Rose (O'Donnell) Volk. Raised in the suburban Pittsburgh area, LaVerne graduated from nursing school and worked as a registered nurse at a psychiatric hospital. She met her future husband, Chuck, while he was on leave from the U.S. Army during World War II. After his discharge, they married in the spring of 1949 at the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Pittsburgh, PA. A resident of Grayslake for the past 19 years, LaVerne and her husband lived in several cities across the U.S. as a result of her husband's career with Chrysler. Shortly after her marriage, she left her nursing career to devote her time to her family and manage her household, especially as her husband traveled because of his job. After initially living in Pittsburgh, she managed several moves as they lived in Royal Oak, MI, Auburn, IN, Minneapolis, MN, Norwalk, CT, Cincinnati, OH, Rockville, MD, Denton, TX, and Troy, MI before moving to Grayslake. Laverne always enjoyed the opportunity to experience a new city. A loving wife, mother and grandmother, her family was her top priority throughout her lifetime. She cherished being a loving grandmother to six granddaughters and couldn't wait to hear their latest accomplishments. Survivors include her husband of 64 years, Chuck; four children, G. Wayne (Linda) Garber of Alpharetta, GA, Gary (Teresa) Garber of Parkland, FL, Jill (Gregg) Helm of Grayslake, and Brad (Leslie) Garber of Dearborn, MI; six granddaughters, Alexis, Lauren, Lindsey, Kelsey, Emma, and Katherine; and a brother, Fred (Bonnie) Volk of Carnegie, PA. The cremation rite will be accorded privately. Inurnment will be in the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies in Bridgeville, PA. Her family suggests memorials honoring LaVerne's memory to be directed to: Assistance in Healthcare, Cancer Treatment Centers of America, P.O. Box 396, Zion, IL 60099, aihionline.org.
