LaVERNE (TRESSEL) DeJEAN

DeJEAN
LaVERNE (TRESSEL)
Age 89, of Pittsburgh, on Friday, November 30, 2012, stepped out of the shadows and into the warm embrace and bright light of a merciful God. A reunion is planned on the North side of the pearly gates with her beloved grandson, Donnie and her wonderful friend, Glenn. Born October 24, 1923 in Pittsburgh, she was the daughter of the late Albert F. and Emma M. (Simon) Tressel. LaVerne was a 1941 graduate of Perry High School. After two years of education at Mt. Mercy College in Pittsburgh she transferred to Allegheny General Hospital Nursing School Program. After graduation, she began a successful career as a registered nurse at the Warren State Hospital. After her marriage in 1945, she relocated to Dayton, Ohio. LaVerne began her career at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Dayton, Ohio from 1948 to 1966 where she fulfilled the role of a pediatric nurse and a floor nurse. She acted as a nursing instructor at the Dayton School of Practical Nursing from 1960-1966 with quite the sense of humor. In 1966, she moved her children back to Pittsburgh and began her career at the Western Psychiatric Institute & Clinic where she began in admissions and ultimately became the charge nurse in the ECT Unit. In addition, she fulfilled the role as Chief Nurse of Central Supply. In 1993, LaVerne reluctantly retired after many years of dedicated service. For over ten years, she volunteered at the Meals on Wheels in West View, but above all her selflessness, kindheartedness, generosity, and independence will be truly missed by those who had the honor of knowing and loving her. She leaves behind to cherish her memory, her two loving children, Michelle "Mikey" (DeJean) Schechner; and her husband, Robert, of Scottsdale, AZ and Don C. DeJean II and his wife, Jan, of Cranberry Township; her two, loving granddaughters, Kristin Richter, and her husband, Tim, of Boise, ID, and Rachel DeJean of Pittsburgh. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved grandson, Don C. "Donnie" DeJean III; her wonderful friend, Glenn Reutzel; and her dear brother, Albert F. Tressel, Jr. The DeJean family will welcome friends on Monday from 2-9 p.m. at the GLENN-KILDOO FUNERAL HOME, INC., 130 Wisconsin Avenue, Cranberry Township. A Vigil Service will be held at the funeral home on Monday at 3:00 p.m. with Fr. John Getsy. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, December 4, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. at the Holy Spirit Parish, 608 Farragut Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15209 with Fr. John Getsy, celebrant. She will be laid to rest at St. Mary's Cemetery in Mt. Troy. If desired, memorial contributions may be made in her honor in support of Animal Friends, 562 Camp Horne Road, Pittsburgh, PA 15237 or the West View Meals on Wheels, 100 Bellevue Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15229.
