Sister Mary DeChantal Serwinski, the former Magdalene Elizabeth Serwinski, died peacefully, Feb. 17, 2014, at Marian Manor Nursing Home. She was 82. She entered the Sisters of the Holy Spirit from St. Joseph Parish In Everson, PA. After graduating from Duquesne University, she did graduate studies at Kent University and additional studies in Rome, Italy. For 29 years, Sister taught in a number of schools in Ohio and Pennsylvania. Following ten years spent as an elementary school principal, Sister DeChantal responded to a request to become the coordinator of her community's retired and Infirm Sisters. She was generously devoted to their care. Sister's generous and compassionate nature endeared her to all who knew her. Sister DeChantal was one of three Sisters of the Holy Spirit who sewed and outfitted statues for the Christmas Creche in downtown Pittsburgh. From its inception to, and including, this past Christmas, the Creche's gift to the City of Pittsburgh included the loving touch and hours of work of sewing of Sister DeChantal. In addition to the Sisters of the Holy Spirit, she is survived by her two brothers, Joseph V. (Mary Ann) Serwinski of Blairsville and Bernard (Joan) of Carlisle; her sister, Theresa Neiderer of Carlisle; and nieces and nephews. Friends will be received at the Motherhouse of the Sisters of the Holy Spirit on Thursday 2-7 p.m. and on Friday 1-4 p.m. A Vigil Service will be held on Thursday at 7 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be on Friday at 4 p.m., followed by interment in the Cemetery of the Sisters of the Holy Spirit.
