REV. Dr. ROBERT L., Jr.
85, formerly of Mt. Lebanon and currently residing at Providence Point in Scott Twp., died peacefully on Wednesday, October 30, 2013. Born in Mt. Lebanon on December 1, 1927, he was the son of the late Robert L. Kelley, Sr. and Elsie Emerick Kelley; beloved husband of 61 years of the late Ruth Ann (Jacob) Kelley (married December 29, 1951); father of Kathryn Anne (William) Karns and Robert John (Gloria) Kelley; grandfather of Christopher Lee Kelley; half brother of the late James Kelley; brother-in-law of Helen and the late Robert M. Jacob. Dr. Kelley was a 1945 graduate of Mt. Lebanon High School, a 1948 graduate of the University of Pittsburgh, and a 1951 Summa Cum Laude graduate of Pittsburgh Theological Seminary. He earned his Master's of Theology in 1959 from Princeton Theological Seminary, his Doctorate of Theology in 1972 from Princeton University
and he received an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree from Tarkio College in 2000. Raised in Mt. Lebanon, his family's home church was Mt. Lebanon U.P. Church. Rev. Kelley was ordained as a Presbyterian minister in 1951 and served from 1951-55 as Minister of Education at Beverly Heights U.P. Church in Mt. Lebanon, and during those years also instructed part time at Pittsburgh Xenia Seminary in Homiletics, Hebrew, and Greek. Dr. Kelley was a faculty member at Pittsburgh Theological Seminary (PTS) from 1955-1997, teaching principally in New Testament studies, and in 1990 he was named the G. Albert Shoemaker Chair in Bible and Archaeology. In retirement, he assisted in the PTS Admissions Office and taught several of the first Summer Youth Institute programs there, and he also continued to preach and teach in many Pittsburgh area churches. He also enjoyed attending Westminster Presbyterian Church in recent years. Bob was a lifelong supporter of Pittsburgh area sports teams, rooting most intensely for his Pitt Panthers as well as the Pirates, Steelers, and Mt. Lebanon High School teams. The family plans no viewing hours. Relatives and friends are invited to attend his Memorial Service in the Sanctuary at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 2040 Washington Road, Upper St. Clair on Monday, November 11, 2013 at 1 p.m. The family will receive guests following the service.
