FROMME SISTER M. REBECCA
(CLARE E. FROMME)
A Pittsburgh Sister of Mercy for 83 years, died at Mercy Hall in the Convent of Mercy on February 6, 2013. Born in Pittsburgh, PA, she was 99 years old. Daughter of Bernard and Gertrude (Ernst) Fromme, Sister Rebecca entered the Sisters of Mercy from St. Andrew Parish in Pittsburgh in 1930 and made final vows in 1935. Sister Rebecca earned degrees from Mount Mercy College (now Carlow University) and Duquesne University. An educator for 45 years, she taught in area Catholic schools, including Epiphany, St. Mary's, St. Colman, St. Cyril of Alexandria, and St. Pius V, as well as serving as principal at St. Maurice, Holy Family in Latrobe and St. Mary's. Sister Rebecca then moved to Florida where she was the principal at St. Thomas the Apostle School in South Miami, FL. Additionally, she worked as a pastoral care associate at Holy Cross Hospital in Fort Lauderdale, FL for 15 years until her retirement in 2002 when she returned to Pittsburgh. Sister Rebecca strove to live her life "centered in God, for whom alone we go forward or stay back" (C. McAuley) and knew this as the foundation of her prayer and ministry. All who met her recognized her as generous, thoughtful, prayerful, and compassionate with a sparkle in her eye, a dry wit, and a strong will. She gave herself fully to each ministry through her life with a special joy in teaching. Preceded in death by her parents, her sisters, Gertrude Fromme, Mary Ubinger and Cecilia Lyons; and brothers, Edward, William, Bernard, and Raymond Fromme. Sister Rebecca is survived by devoted and attentive nieces and nephews. Friends will be received Sunday, February 10, 2013 from 1-8 p.m. (Prayer Service at 7) at the Convent of Mercy, 3333 Fifth Avenue. Funeral Mass will be celebrated Monday at 11:00 a.m. in the Chapel at the Convent of Mercy, followed by interment in St. Xavier's Cemetery, Latrobe, PA. Arrangements entrusted to the EDWARD P. KANAI FUNERAL HOME, 500 Greenfield Avenue. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sisters of Mercy, 3333 Fifth Ave., Pittsburgh, PA 15213 or Carlow University Scholarship Fund.
