ALLEN Dr. THOMAS E.
Of Oakland, age 93, peacefully at his home on Saturday, January 26, 2013. Beloved husband of both the late Ruth Jenkins Allen and current wife, Judith (Speelman) Cannava Allen; father of Catherine (Bing) Tai of Michigan, Christine Murray of Washington, Cynthia (Herb) Bartholomew of Arizona, Carolyn Allen of Michigan, Thomas J. (Lisa) Allen of Tennessee, and Candace (Michael) Uricchio of Fox Chapel; grandfather of Emma and Sam Tai, Katherine, Mary Anne and Thomas E. Allen, Kyle, Jasper and Elyse Uricchio; stepfather of Carlo Cannava of New York; adoptive father of Abraha Bahta of California; brother of Rosemary Bruce of Colorado and Charles Allen of California. Preceded in death by his brothers, Emerson Ray Allen, Jr., Sam, George and John Allen and his sisters, Rebecca "Becky" Allegood, Sarah "Sadie" Harlacher and Lillian "Posie" McCurdy. Dr. Allen was a 1940 graduate of the University of Pittsburgh from where he also received his M.D. in 1943. He then served as a Medical Doctor and First Lt. in the U.S. Army during WWII
. Dr. Allen opened his family practice in 1947 in Oakmont and in 1951 began his private Obstetrics and Gynecology practice in Oakmont and Pittsburgh, serving until his retirement in 1995. During his career, he held various staff positions at Magee Women's Hospital and faculty positions at the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Allen also served in many civic organizations and was a former board member of the Pittsburgh Ballet Theater, The Pittsburgh Chamber Music Project, WQED Public Television and Radio, as well as several other groups. He was a former Board President of the Society for Contemporary Craft and from 1970-2010 he served as Chairman of the Board of the American Waterways Wind Orchestra. Dr. Allen received many awards and honors including the 1990 Clara Bell Duval Award from NARAL of Pennsylvania and the Civil Libertarian of the Year award from the A.C.L.U., Greater Pittsburgh Chapter.
