Age 82, of Delmont, formerly of Penn Hills, died peacefully Friday, May 9, 2014, in William Penn Care Center, Jeannette, with his devoted family at his side. He was born February 28, 1932, in East Liberty, a son of the late Walter Bernard Ahsmann, Sr. and Dorothy Elizabeth (Ewing) Gelzhiser. Prior to retiring, Walter was employed as a manipulator operator and crane operator by U.S. Steel, Homestead. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War. Walter was a member of St. John Baptist de la Salle Catholic Church, Delmont, and St. Mary's Catholic Church, Export. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Constance Harper. Walter will be greatly missed by his loving family. He is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years, Mary Ann G. (Berardelli) Ahsmann; children, Linda (Byron) Cogswell, of Florida, Thomas (Joanne) Ahsmann, of Ohio, Nancy Salera, of Delmont, and Janet (David) Taukus, of Pittsburgh; brother, Robert Gelzhiser of St. Louis, Missouri; sister, Carole (John) Kamecher, of North Irwin; five nieces and a nephew. Walter will be especially missed by his five loving grandchildren, Thomas, Jr. (Holly), Brian (Marci), Lisa (Jeff), David and Christina, and eight great-grandchildren. Family and friends will be received from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Monday at the VAIA FUNERAL HOME, INC., 463 Athena Drive, Delmont, (724) 468-1177. A Funeral Mass for Walter will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Tuesday in St. John Baptist de la Salle Catholic Church, 497 Athena Drive, Delmont, with Father Joseph Bonafed as celebrant. Everyone please meet at the church. Interment with full military honors accorded by VFW Post 33 Honor Guard, Greensburg, will follow in Twin Valley Memorial Park, Delmont.
