Age 87, of Glenshaw, passed away on Tuesday, March 26, 2013. She was born in 1925 to Margaret McKie and Chauncey Ewing in Washington, PA. She married William Marlin III in 1954, and he preceded her in death in 1969. She graduated from the Washington Hospital School of Nursing in 1946, and went on to the University of Pittsburgh, where she obtained both her Bachelor's and Master's degrees. In 1971, she was in the first class of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners. She worked for 15 years in the Pediatric Outpatient Department at Allegheny General Hospital. She worked as a staff nurse in several area hospitals, a teaching supervisor of the Pediatric Department at Washington Hospital, and then as a Clinical Instructor of Pediatric Nursing at the University of Pittsburgh for four years. She was a member of first group of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners to be nationally recognized and certified by the American Nurses Association. After retiring, she became a Volunteer in Mission for the Presbyterian Church, U.S.A. and served at Embangweni and Domasi in Malawi, Africa. She also served on the Navajo Reservation in New Mexico, where she became legally authorized to write prescriptions. In 1992, she served in Somalia (before and after U.S. troops arrived) at Baidoa Hospital where she helped set up a new pediatric department and intensive feeding care center. Ruth was a life member of Sigma Theta Tau, International Honorary Society of Nursing, life member of the Washington Hospital School of Nursing Alumni, member of Glenshaw Presbyterian Church in Glenshaw, PA, member and past moderator of Presbyterian Women, ordained deacon and elder in Glenshaw Presbyterian Church, member of the Order of Eastern Star (O.E.S.), Jepthah Chapter, Worthy Matron for the Jessie C. Spangler Chapter, Registered Nurse in Pennsylvania, New Mexico, and Malawi in central east Africa. What she enjoyed most was being a mother to her three marvelous children, William E. Marlin of Shaler Township, David (Patty Katkic) Marlin of Gibsonia, and Peggy Marlin (Bill) Ziegler of West Deer Township; she also had three delightful grandsons, Daniel and Ryan Ziegler, and Joseph Marlin; she was the sister of Ann Seibel, of Washington, PA and the late William Ewing of Lynchburg, VA. Before her death, she traveled extensively throughout the U.S., especially in the Tristate Area as a missionary speaker and representative for the overseas medical division of the Presbyterian Church, U.S.A. Friends will be received at the BOCK FUNERAL HOME, 1500 Mt. Royal Boulevard, Glenshaw, Friday from 2-4 and 7-9. A Funeral Service will be held at Glenshaw Presbyterian Church, Glenshaw at 11 a.m. Saturday. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations may be made to Glenshaw Presbyterian Church or the Embangweni Hospital, P.O. Box 7, Embangweni, Malawi, Central East Africa.
