WILLIAM McCONNELL Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Oct. 2 to Oct. 3, 2011.
McCONNELL WILLIAM E.
Age 90, of Friendship Village (Upper St. Clair) on Friday, Sept. 30, 2011. Ruth, his wife of fifty-six years, preceded Bill in death in 2005. He is survived by a son, Tim (Tricia) of Columbus, OH, and two daughters Jane (Alan) Dossett of Southboro, MA and Janice McConnell of Pittsburgh; also four grandchildren Katie and Emily McConnell, Adam Dossett and Julie McConnell-Romero. Bill was born on May 5, 1921 to Edward and Irene McConnell of Jeannette, PA. Following graduation from Jeannette High School, where he was a varsity letterman in football, Bill enrolled at the University of Pittsburgh. He was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity. In 1944, after graduation, Bill was commissioned in the US Army. He served as an anti aircraft officer from 1945 to 1948. Following his discharge, Bill began a long and successful career in the glass industry. Through a thirty-one year career with PPG Industries, Bill held a variety of sales and sales management positions: Manager of Pennvernon Sales, Director of Primary Glass Sales, Director of Residential Sales, and Supervisor of Customer Services. Bill was well known and well respected throughout the United States glass industry. He was a true "sales" professional. Upon retirement in 1986, Bill served faithfully in several volunteer positions: Meals on Wheels, Bethel Park, PA and The Guild for the Blind, Bridgeville, PA. He and Ruth were faithful members of Westminster Presbyterian Church (Upper St. Clair) for over fifty years. Bill served as an usher and as a member of the session. The family wishes to thank the wonderful staff at Friendship Village Health Center, the Rev. Dr. Cindy McClung, and the compassionate staff of Odyssey Hospice. A memorial service for Bill will be held on Monday, Oct. 10, 2011, at 2:00 p.m. in Friendship Village, Upper St. Clair. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Bethel-USC Meals on Wheels, Bethel Presbyterian Church, 2999 Bethel Church Road, Bethel Parks, PA 15102; the Blind Envision Rehabilitation Services of Pittsburgh, 1800 West St., Homestead, PA 15120; or Odyssey Hospice, Mongiovi Commons, 190 Bilmar Dr., Suite 200, Pittsburgh, PA 15205. Arrangements by MILTON E. HAMEL MORTUARY LLC., Upper St. Clair Twp.

Dear Tim, Jane and Janice,
I'm so sorry for your loss. Your Dad was a great guy and a big help to me at PPG. I used to call Bill the "salesman's salesman" who always knew the customer's kids' names, their dog's name, etc. He always spoke of his kids with pride, and Bill will be missed.
