ANTHONY VINCENT
Age 54, of Upper St. Clair, unexpectedly passed away on Wednesday, January 8, 2014. Beloved and wonderful husband of Julianne (Zehnder) Cugini of 27 years; loving father of Annamarie, Angela, Julia (Scheller), Anthony, Jr., and Mary; nurturing grandfather of Emily and Caroline Scheller; devoted son of Rita (Rondinelli) Cugini and the late Vincent Cugini; son-in-law of Robert and Connie Zehnder; caring brother of Rocco (Sue) Cugini; uncle of Christina Graswick, Danielle DeRose, Vincent Cugini, Robert Cugini, and Christopher Cugini; nephew of Reno and Fulvia Rondinelli; cousin of Patrick, John Pierre, Louis, Tizzie (Rankin); and many other cousins, aunts, uncles, and family members. He was a brilliant researcher, scientist, teacher, volunteer, and faith-filled man. He loved to spend time with his family, read, take walks, get cups of coffee, go on family vacations, and chat on the phone with his children. He had a great sense of humor and saw a solution to every problem. Anthony worked for the Department of Energy for 26 years and rose to the position of Director. Through his work, he was able to reach out to many people and laboratories in numerous countries all over the world. He received his undergraduate, Master's and Doctorate degrees in Chemical Engineering from the University of Pittsburgh. He spent countless hours volunteering. He loved coaching his children's sports teams, camping with the Boy Scouts, working at the Saint Louise Fish Fry, judging the High School Science Bowl, managing the food bank at St. Raphael, and mentoring at Holy Family. He will be missed terribly by his family and friends, but because of all his kindnesses will live forever in our hearts. Funeral arrangements by BEINHAUERS. Friends and Family are welcome at 2828 Washington Rd., McMurray, 724-941-3211 on Sunday 1-4 and 6-9 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday 10:30 a.m. in St. Louise de Marillac Church. To the Cugini family: I am sorry for your loss. Although his work as director of the NETL required him to fly or drive over four hundred miles to meet senior executives and Congress, he also took time to befriend other staff who did not report to him. New people would sometimes try to greet him by his honorific title. Then he used his towering presence to reassure an otherwise startled new person that it was okay to call him by his first name, “Anthony”. Sometimes I would hear him exchange proud family stories especially about his family (like how his kids had made him proud) or care about charitable causes. An external testament to Anthony's towering legacy in the chemical engineering arts are at least forty-three inventions by other scientists and engineers throughout the US and around the world referencing Anthony's wit as an inventor on three US patents. Invisible testaments are from scientists and engineers who privately credit Anthony for some intangible inspiration (sometimes nonverbal) he had given them. As a neighbor near a vacant telework office that Anthony used when he was not traveling with an entourage to EOB, Hill or some other meeting, I will also miss him because he praised his family and cared for his community.
