HAUDENSHIELD DR. GEORGE K.
(THE HONORABLE)
George K. Haudenshield of Scott Township, age 90, died on February 19, 2011 after a brief illness. George was born in Carnegie, PA on June 11, 1920 and grew up in Rosslyn Farms, the son of the late Dr. Samuel S. Haudenshield and Ida Kirkbride Haudenshield. Beloved partner of Susan A Kelly; husband of the late Janet C. Chreiman; loving father of Lynn Traver (Tim Provance) and the late Leslie and Roger Scavo; grandfather to Matthew Scavo (Heather), Christopher Traver and Brian Traver; great-grandfather to Nathan and Olivia Scavo; dear brother to Barbara Haudenshield and the late Suzanne Spence and Marjorie. Also survived by loving nieces and nephews. George attended Rosslyn Farms Grade School and Carnegie High School. He attended Allegheny College and the University of Pittsburgh, where he graduated from the Pitt Dental School 1943 with highest honors. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy while still a dental student and immediately following his graduation he joined the U.S. Marines at Paris Island as a dental officer. He later served with a Seabee Battalion in the Pacific Theater. He was stationed in Okinawa preparing for the invasion of Japan when the war ended. After the war George returned to Carnegie where he practiced dentistry for forty years, many of these with his father, Sam Haudenshield, at their office at the corner of Main Street and Washington Avenue. George is a member of the Pennsylvania Dental Society, Delta Sigma Delta Dental Fraternity and the Pittsburgh Academy of Dentistry. George was on the Scott Township School Board for 14 years and later became President of the Chartiers Valley School Board. He was elected to the Pennsylvania State Legislature where he served from 1959 to 1972. He was a member of the Professional Licenses and Appropriations Committee and later Chairman of the Education and State Government Committee. George has served on a number of local Boards and is currently serving as a member of the Chartiers Valley Redevelopment Authority. He was a charter member of the Covenant Community Presbyterian Church, where he served as Elder and Trustee and also a charter member of the Church Lunch Bunch, where he spent his Friday afternoons. George was also a 63 year active member of the Carnegie-Collier Rotary Club and past president. He celebrated his 90th birthday on June 11, 2010 with family and friends at the Rotary Club Wine Tasting Gala held at The Club at Nevillewood. He is a 60 year member of the Lafayette Lodge, Pennsylvania Consistory and Syria Shrine. George also delivered Meals on Wheels as a regular and extra for over 16 years. In addition to being an avid bridge player and former golfer and also a true Steeler fan, Georgewas an outstanding artist working in painting, wood carving and brass sculpturing. He enjoyed "Do it Yourself' home repairs and projects, gardening and landscaping. He was ever intrigued by games and puzzles and always loved a challenge. He dearly loved his 2005 Mustang convertible and could often be seen during the summer sporting around town with the top down. George was also a world traveler, having been to most corners of the globe with the Navy or in personal travels throughout his lifetime. He also enjoyed the beaches of Lauderdale by the Sea where he spent many winters as a part owner in the Tropic Ranch Resort. George had a keen wit and sense of humor, and treated everyone as a friend. He loved people, always with a smile on his face and blue eyes sparkling, he will be truly missed by all who knew him. My uncle George was always a special person with a spirited heart of gold. Although we haven't kept in touch in recent years he was there for my brother and I when my mother Marge, his sister, passed away.

In 1968 I stayed with uncle George for a portion of the summer while my mother recovered from a stroke. Lynn taught me to drive a stick shift in her MG. He made me feel welcomed when that period of time could have been a real mess for our family. But Uncle George was family and I will miss him.

The Haudenshields have had a proud heritage in the Pittsburgh area and George was a part of it. Lynn, you should be very proud of your father.

I am so sorry for your loss. There are so many wonderful memories growing up and being apart of the Orchardview Neighborbood. We will all miss Haudy...his smile, laugh and sense of humor. The pool, his yellow convertable and the best July 4th Picnics. May God bless and take care of him.

We were sorry to learn that Haudy had passed away. I echo the sentiments of my childhood friends...Orchardview was a great, safe place to grow up! The Haudenshields had the prettiest daughters, best pool and the most delicious raspberries. Later on, we had good times and fun golfing with Haudy and my parents on our trips to Pgh. Lunch afterwards wasn't bad either. Haudy Haudenshield will be missed.

To George,
It is hard to even express how much you meant to me and how very much I will miss you. Your presence was bigger than life and you lit up the room like the sun. You brought out the best in those around you with your zest for life, your wonderful way of telling a story and your gift to make each of us feel that we were the only ones in the room. My heart is breaking for me but is filled with joy for you that you are at peace. Can't say the same for the angels who are now being entertained by the wonderful and always delightful, Dr. George Haudenshield! Rest in peace my dear friend.

I would like to echo Mike Marlier’s words that growing up on Orchardview Drive was certainly a great experience and Haudy and Janet were a big part of what made it so special. Yes, parenting was a shared experience among this close group of friends and the parties were frequent and boisterous (perfect for listening in from down the hall of our ranch home). Doc was special because of his commitment to community service and he and Janet helped my mom and my Aunt Jane for many years following the death of my dad at a young age. I’ll always remember his sense of humor—his laugh was infectious—and how he loved to tease my mom at the bridge table. He was one of the good guys and will be sorely missed. My deepest sympathies to you, Lynn, and to the entire family. God bless.

Dr. Geo was my dentist when a kid; he was tough on me, but had good teeth my whole life because of him! Take comfort in his long life, and the good things that he did for others. He is in a better place now.

My brother, 2 sisters and I had the great good fortune to grow up on Orchardview Drive, where people could leave all their doors unlocked, and any grownup could disciplne any kid when appropriate and nobody complained. No crime, no drugs, no bullies, and we played in the street.
What a wonderful place, thanks to people like Doc Haudenshield.
