JAN NEMEC Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from May 14 to May 15, 2017.
NEMEC
DR. JAN, MD
Age 54, of Pittsburgh, unexpectedly passed away on May 8, 2017. He is survived by his daughter, Katerina (Sydney, Australia); son, Jakub (Minneapolis, Minnesota); his mother, Dr. Marcela Nemcova (Prague, Czech Republic); and a legion of colleagues, devoted patients, and friends. He also leaves behind his chocolate Labrador, and longtime companion, Med. Dr. Nemec was a dedicated physician, an intellectual, a champion of social justice, and a loving father. An Associate Professor of Medicine at University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and UPMC Heart and Vascular Institute, Dr. Nemec was an internationally recognized expert in the subspecialty of Electrophysiology in Cardiology. Beloved by his patients for the careful and dedicated clinical care he delivered, Dr. Nemec remained active and recognized for his research throughout his career. He was especially focused on inherited disorders of the heart rhythm and channel mutations. Dr. Nemec was born in Prague, of then communist Czechoslovakia, on November 7, 1962. He obtained his medical degree from the Charles University School of Medicine in the Czech Republic. After completing his medical residency in the District Hospital in the Czech Republic, he came to the United States to complete another residency in internal medicine, fellowship in cardiology and Electrophysiology at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. He was recruited to UPMC in 2006 where he embarked on a very productive career as an academic physician. In addition to his research and clinical care, Dr. Nemec was a dedicated teacher and was awarded Edward I Curtiss Memorial Teaching Award in 2007. Alarmed by the injustices he witnessed and experienced as a child and young adult in a communist state, Dr. Nemec remained dedicated to the cause of social justice throughout his adult life. He donated countless hours during his vacations and personal wealth to serve the most underserved populations throughout the world in their fight against poverty, disease, and war. Jan will be dearly missed by his family, friends, colleagues, and patients. Friends will be received at JOHN A. FREYVOGEL SONS, INC., (freyvogelfuneralhome.com) 4900 Centre Avenue at Devonshire Street, Pittsburgh, PA (412-621-1665), on Monday May 15, 2017, from 3-5 p.m. and followed by a memorial service at 5:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Doctors Without Borders in honor of Dr. Jan Nemec. http://www.doctorswithoutborders.org/

I'm so sorry to hear of Jan's passing (and a year late!). We trained together in Rochester, MN, from 1993-2000. I remember Jan well for always going the extra mile in patient care, and for connecting with him over the fact that we were both from Europe. Unfortunately, we completely lost touch after Jan left for the Twin Cities.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the family!! Dr . Nemic was an incredible doctor. He was responsible for saving my life. When I was in fear of what was going on with my body, he always made sure I knew that I was in good hands. 2 ablations later my life is back to normal. I was so grateful to him and just compassion and care that he showed. He will be missed!!

Dr. Nemec was one of the smartest most patient physicians I've ever had the pleasure of knowing and working with. His knowledge was vast, his kindness was endless, and the time he spent with his patients was never rushed. His passing is an absolute shock. He will be very missed.

To his children, your father was the very best physician. He never became annoyed when we paged him,...no matter the time. Even if it was a mistake, he would try to help staff figure things out from his end. As smart as he was, he never made those with less knowledge feel inferior; he freely shared what he knew. He was an amazing educator to both patients and staff alike. My deepest condolences to your family at this very difficult time. I will keep you all in my prayers.

Just heard of his death today. He was my cardiologist and I loved him. He changed my life for the better and gave me my strength and stamina back. When I would see him for my annual checkup, I would call him "My Hero". I will miss him tremendously. He was a marvelous physician. My sincere condolences to his family and colleagues.

Dr. Nemec and I shared many conversations in the Electrophysiology office suite before I retired in 2015. He always had a smile for me. It was part of my job to ask if he wanted to upgrade his flip phone to an iPhone but he was happy with the older technology; that was in keeping with his old-world charm. His research and relationships with patients are well-known and he was an icon in the Heart and Vascular Institute. He will be missed. My condolences to the family and friends.
