GIBSON PACKER, M.D.
Age 92, of Pittsburgh, beloved husband of Alice Reed Buchanan, died peacefully on February 2, 2013. He was born April 15, 1920, the son of Charity Packer and John Grier Buchanan and brother of the late John G. Buchanan, Jr. and the late James J. Buchanan. Raised in Pittsburgh, he was a graduate of Shady Side Academy (1937), Princeton University (1941) and The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine (1944). He was a World War II veteran, serving in the U.S. Army Medical Corps. Following an internship at Mercy Hospital in Pittsburgh, he completed his residency at Babies and Children's Hospital of New York, before returning to Pittsburgh to establish a private practice as a pediatrician, caring for generations of families. He was on the staff of Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh and a professor at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. He served as a board member of the Children's Home and provided his services to the Allegheny County Health Department's Well Baby Clinics. He was an elder and life-long member of the East Liberty Presbyterian Church. A proud Pittsburgh resident, he was a supporter of the arts and regularly attended Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra concerts. An insatiable traveler, he made numerous trips over his lifetime, including two around-the-world journeys. On many weekend trips, he and his wife Alice visited every covered bridge in Pennsylvania. Other passions included fishing, swimming, sailing, enjoying paintings by Rembrandt, singing, and spending summers with his family on Lake Winnipesaukee in New Hampshire. He was predeceased by his dear first wife, Cathryn Grier Buchanan, and his infant son, Gibson Packer Buchanan, Jr. He was a loving father to Margaret Buchanan and her husband, Louis Golden of West Hartford, CT, Cathryn Buchanan and her husband, Jeffrey Pierce of Monroe, WA, David Buchanan and his wife, Mary Horst of Jamaica Plain, MA, and Thomas Buchanan and his wife, Mary Beth Buchanan of Fox Chapel, PA; he was the proud grandfather of Jennifer, James, Daniel, Ava, Julia and William. The family is planning a Memorial Service and celebration of his life in April, with details to follow.
