While still in High School in Bellaire, I had the pleasure and honor of playing (tuba) with the Wheeling Symphony when Henry first came there. Whatever successes I had in subsequent years with other orchestras and ensembles has derived from the experince of working under Haney's baton. I found him to be challenging and inspiring, critical and supportive, demanding yet communicative. I particularly enjoyed his Saturday night radio shows, demonstrating the linkages between classical music and some of the pop tunes of the day. And his public enthusiasm was infectious, going up to total strangers on the street and "promoting" the WSO to whomever would listen -- as well as to some who didn't.

I am still a performing tubist, as are my children. While one never really knows where inspiration and experiences come from, it can be truly said that Henry still, after these almost 55 years, has an influence on my playing and the musical part of my life. From his very first concert in Wheeling (including the Borodin #2, which became one of my favorites) to the inspiting demands of the Sibelius #2, Henry's fire still brings back both the fond memories and the well-learned lessons. I am a better musician, and I think a better person, because of Henry's influence on my life. To his entire family, I would only say "Thank you for sharing him with us."
