Peacefully, with his family by his side, on Thursday, March 21, 2013, age 55, of Squirrel Hill. Beloved husband of Jill (Gordon) Smith for 31 years; loving father of Kaela (Andy) Filipek and Zachary Smith; devoted son of Herman (Marlene) Smith and the late Selma Smith; cherished son-in-law of Leonard (late Esther) Gordon; wise-cracking brother to Esther (Rick) Cohen and Bonnie (Steve) Koski; devoted brother-in-law of Eve (Bob) Herrle, Tracey (David) Palmieri and Michael (Nahir) Gordon. He was an incredible uncle to many nieces and nephews and well-loved by all of his cousins, friends and customers. For more than 40 years, Jay worked side-by-side with his father operating H.A. Smith & Son Uniforms. He was also known as "Coach Jay" to his son Zack's Squirrel Hill Baseball teams. Jay was a giving and unselfish husband, a wonderful daddy and a loyal friend. He will be deeply missed by all of those who were fortunate enough to have known him. Services will be held at D'ALESSANDRO FUNERAL HOME, 4522 Butler Street, Lawrenceville on Sunday at 3 p.m. Visitation is one hour prior to services (2-3 p.m.). In honor of his courageous battle with cancer, the family suggests that in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Hillman Cancer Center, 5115 Center Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15232.
